The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred during a safety test at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A reactor exploded, releasing massive amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere. It happened on April 26th, 1986. The disaster occurred in Pripyat, a city in northern Ukraine, which was then part of the Soviet Union. The accident was caused by a flawed reactor design and serious mistakes made by the plant operators during a safety test. They turned off critical safety systems, which led to an uncontrollable reaction and explosion. 2 workers died during the explosion, and about 28 emergency workers died within weeks from acute radiation sickness. Thousands developed cancer and other illnesses due to radiation exposure. Radioactive fallout spread across Europe, contaminating large areas. A 30-kilometer area around Chernobyl remains mostly uninhabited. The disaster cost billions in cleanup, resettlement, and health care.

The Incident occurred at 5:06 pm WET (UTC+0) in dense fog, when KLM Flight 4805 initiated its takeoff run, colliding with the right side of Pan Am Flight 1736 still on the runway. The impact and the resulting fire killed all 248 people on board the KLM plane and 335 of the 396 people on board the Pan Am plane, with only 61 survivors in the front section of the latter aircraft. With a total of 583 fatalities, the disaster is the deadliest accident in aviation history.

In the late 1970s, residents of Love Canal, a neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York, discovered that their homes and school were built on top of a toxic chemical waste dump. Over 21,000 tons of hazardous waste had been buried there in the 1940s and later leaked into the soil and water. This led to serious health problems, including cancer, birth defects, and miscarriages. The area was eventually evacuated, and it became a key moment in the U.S. environmental movement.
