Students even don't like writing in their mother language so writing in English is an almost impossible task for them. Because they aren't so comfortable in English they can't think and write in English easily. But of course that can vary from student to student. Some students May be better at writing because they have enough time to think and organize the sentences.

Writing can be used as assignment at home but as a teacher you should keep in mind that, they May get so much help from the internet and some artificial intelligent programmes, so you can't be sure if the students can really write in English or not.
