It was developed in New England around 1836 in reaction to rationalism. Transcendentalism taught that divinity pervades nature and humanity. This essentially means that people and nature are inherently good. People are at their best when they are self reliant. For example the idea of being independent and going on your own is an American idea. We separated from the British who we knew to be controlling us. Another idea is the idea of moving west and living self sufficiently in nature. This was accepted by Americans because they wanted to move west. But the ideas of the transcendentalists are much more extreme than this. They believed in separation from society and living a self sufficient life away from others. They also believed that people should find their own connection with god without an intermediary.
