There are different types of user interface:

  • Menu: an on-screen list of options
  • Form: an on-screen form in which to type data
  • Command line: a space to type instructions
  • Natural language: a voice-based interface

A user interface is often termed as being a GUI and a WIMP interface.

A GUI is the term for an interface that is based on graphics and pictures rather than text.

A WIMP (Windows Icon Mouse Pointer) interface is a particular type of GUI. Not all GIUs use windows, icons, menus and pointers but might use one or two of them.

All WIMPs are also GUIs, but not all GUIs are WIMPs.
