I was struck by the PBS graph about Distinctions of Equity. It's an important reminder that I need to do more to truly become a culturally responsive educator.

Authentic partnership must first start with us truly believing ALL students are capable and deserving of whatever they need to be successful. Anti-racism is a constant practice of learning about the history of racism and oppression both in the United States and the rest of the world. It is using your white privilege (or non-black POC privilege) to uplift, celebrate, and protect Black voices, art, music, intelligence, wisdom, work, etc. Anti-racism does not happen in a 45 minute online training. In schools, it means tearing down a lot of our racist expectations and judgments around behavior, "appropriateness", and work ethic.

"Authentic partnership" makes me think about Dr. Christopher Emdin and how he believes that working with students means working with their families and communities, especially if we are not part of the same race, ethnicity, culture, etc. Authentic partnership does not mean calling a parent when their student "misbehaves". It means connecting with families because you value them and care about their wellbeing. It means attending games, events, etc. within the community that you teach in.

When I think of anti-racism I think we need to acknowledge and fix the continued inequities we see across academic success, discipline referrals, and the funneling of students of color into non-traditional schooling and out of the regular classroom. As for authentic partnership, I feel as educators we need to go the extra mile to understand the whole child (family, socio-economic status, culture, ethnicity, privilege, community). Echoing what many have said here, so many of the ways that we "do" school value Eurocentric approaches to family partnership, and communicate implicit deficit and shame when parents don't "show up" the way teachers and schools might expect them too. Schools are also set up to dehumanize and digitize -- to produce "workers" and occupy the children of the working class, as this pandemic has made so apparent -- health and staying alive are not important, only economic production matters. If we as teachers instead focus on humanization -- listening, sharing, being vulnerable -- and asset-based thinking towards how families contribute to our classrooms, we will hear and see more clearly how we can work together to provide truly equitable opportunities for the youth in our care.

I think most people are ideologically committed, but having practical models to implement and see how it goes is actually the praxis that improves teaching. i appreciate the work that went into these exercises -- thank you colleagues!

"Anti-racism" for me brings up the hidden history and ongoing power of racism and other oppressive systems in the world, esp in the US context. Have to acknowledge that most people struggle with the concept of "anti-racism" because they struggle with the word "racism" by design...they were never taught it and are constantly told that either it doesn't exist, it's too complicated or painful to learn about, or that it's a foregone conclusion. And this will continue until all public school districts begin to make equity studies and ethnic studies a part of the required curriculum for all graduates. We have 9th grade Ethnic Studies electives sporadically across the district, but that only hits a small percentage of our graduating seniors each year. When will 9th grade ES be a requirement, and how can we shift the resources to make this happen?

"Authentic partnerships" are sincere cooperative relationships between educators, families, and students leveraging a wide range of opportunities/initiatives to enhance the intellectual and personal growth of a student and, in effect, all stakeholders in the equation.

I believe it is essential to offer a more holistic and realistic exposure of "the real world" to students in venues outside of the STEM realm e.g. the social sciences. One must keep in mind that some students will inevitably leave a "bubble" where diversity is commonplace and celebrated. However, we cannot sacrifice standards and a demand for academic excellence to make a "change agent" out of every student. Exposure to and involvement in social discussions and/or activism is fine; however, first things must come first. That first thing is academic excellence in the core curriculum. In a figurative sense and a literal one as well, there are "hungry" people at home and abroad. By "hungry," I mean folks who live in archaic socio/economic frameworks with ZERO hope of anything but a hand to mouth existence if they stay there. Thus, they burn the midnight oil when it comes to self-study and "hitting the books." Awareness of what is going on in the world and formation of an individual identity is necessary; however, standardized test scores such as the SAT, the GPA, and a diverse palette of extracurricular activities will remain the gateway through which potential, future "change agents" may pass to other academic venues.

Authentic partnership, to me, means constantly engaging in and building a real relationship with studnets and families to a point where they feel valued, supported, and encouraged to engage.

What comes up? The belief that efforts towards both of these terms is absolutely essential to our success as educators.

I think about my friends in El Salvador who continued to educate their own community even in the face of scorched earth tactics that led them into refugee camps. The vowels were taught in an e-u-i-a-o order utilizing the word "refugiado" as a base. Adapting, improvising, and overcoming their circumstances, they continued to empower their people to make a better life and future for the next generation.

Anti-racism is away of life all of us should embrace, and if we are doing it right, then we can be nothing but authentic.

By this, I mean we have to be vulnerable and share with the students, so that they in turn feel comfortable doing the same. If there is an open forum of communication and trust, then having these types of conversations and practices becomes a lot easier.

"anti-racism" - the continuous check on yourself and others for racist thinking or actions. "Authentic Partnership" - really taking into consideration family and student cultures when we are building relationships.

Anti-racist teaching in the context of authentic partnership allows students to clearly see how illogical racism is, the different ways it plays out in our society, home cultures, and even family, and prepares students to confront racism in a productive way when they experience it. It allows students to bring in and share their own cultures, to learn and celebrate the cultures of others, and seeing how all cultures are connected.
