I would choose William Clark to be my Captain on my trip. Captain Clark came from a family of ten children, and by age 19, Clark joined the Kentucky Militia. Clark later joined the regular army, and he was promoted to lieutenant. During this time, Clark learned how to build forts, draw maps, lead pack trains through enemy country, and fight the Indians on their ground. Clark was also sent to spy on the Spanish, and he received many successive promotions. He eventually earned the rank of captain. Clark was physically and mentally strong. He was six feet tall, and he had a strong and muscular frame. He was an amazing captain in the military.
Clark was chosen by Meriwhether Lewis to help co-lead the expedition. Jefferson had chosen Lewis as the first leader, and Lewis offered Clark a permanent commission as Captain. Clark was the person in charge of making maps and graphing out the land. Clark kept compass records, he measured distances, and he produced detailed strip maps for areas between major landmarks. His maps included notes on native botanical and zoological specimens and on potential mineral deposits. These maps would be extremely valuable to the westward expansion of the United States.
I would choose Clark to be the Captain of my trip because his maps and graphs are very important and helpful. If Clark didn’t make his maps then people wouldn’t be able to travel to the west. People used Clark’s maps as a guide, and he helped people traveling to the west find trails and paths. He gave the people a general idea of the size of the west and what to expect when traveling to the west. Lewis was also important. Lewis was the person in charge of keeping records of the plants and animals found in the west. I think that information of the land and maps would be more important than information over plants and animals. This is why I would choose Clark as my captain.

He would be able to help repair broken objects and repair broken or damaged guns while on our expedition. In 1804 during the expedition, the expedition was asked to sharpen and repair metal objects by the Native Americans in exchange for corn and dried vegetables. Bratton set up a forge with Alexander Willard and they helped repair the metal objects for the Native Americans.
Bratton also was a strong and intelligent man, and he managed to help kill a bear during May 1805. The team had encountered a bear while they were travelling, and bratton managed to shoot the bear. The team followed the trail left by the wounded bear, and they killed the bear. They preserved the hide and salvaged the meat. If the team didn’t have Bratton then the team could’ve been harmed.

I would also choose to bring along Sacagawea because she knows what she’s doing. She also knows a lot about the land, plants, and animals that we would be exploring. Sacagawea was seventeen years old, and she at age 12, she was kidnapped from her tribe. Sacagawea and her husband joined the expedition after meeting the expedition team. She was very useful to the team, but her husband wasn’t very useful to the team. She gave birth to her son Jean Baptiste while travelling.
Sacagawea’s presence was also very helpful to the tribe. Normally Native Americans would’ve seen the party as a threat, but since they were travelling with a woman and a baby, they seemed peaceful. She was also a valuable interpreter because she spoke both Shoshone and Hidatsa. She would translate what the Native Americans were saying to Hidatsa. Then her husband, Toussaint Charbonneau, would translate what Sacagawea was saying in English. If the party couldn’t talk with the Native Americans then they couldn’t trade. Sacagawea was very useful and helpful on their trip.

Lewis may have collected a specimen of the snowberry bush, but he accidentally left it at Camp Fortunate. The snowberry has a leaf like the small honeysuckle in Missouri, but it bears a globular peas that is white and the size of a garden pea. The berry is formed from a thin smooth pellicle. The plant also has several brown seeds that are placed irregularly. Lewis was probably wondering if the berry was edible or if the berry could be used as paint or dye. He was probably also wondering what species it came from, and he was probably wondering if it actually was a subspecies of honeysuckle. He was also probably wondering what people would think about the plant. Would they think it was pretty or ugly?

Lewis and Clark saw a lot of turtles when they were traveling rivers and streams. Lewis reported that he saw the Spiny Softshell Turtle on May 26, 1805. The turtle spends October through April buried in sand beneath the surface of a pond. The turtles Lewis saw were western spiny softshells, Apalone spinifera hartwegi. There are twelves species and subspecies of these turtles in North America. These turtles have flattened, leathery, carapace that is something flexible. The spines on the fringe of the carapace are called tubercules. These turtles can breathe underwater. Their nose can be used as a snorkel, and they enable the turtle to breathe fresh air while buried in the sand. They have three-clawed feet which are webbed and tipped with sharp claws. It was probably weird for the explorers to see a turtle that could pretty much breather under the mud, and they probably thought that the turtles’ carapace looked weird. The explorers probably weren’t used to seeing a softshell turtle that has a flattened shell, and it may have looked weird. It was probably also weird to see a turtle that pretty much hibernated.

Lewis discovered a “tyger cat” on June 14, 1805 when he was exploring falls and rapids above the Big Falls he had seen on the thirteenth. He discovered a cat looking creature crouched near a burrow. The animal was brownish yellow, and when Lewis approached it, it crouched down about to attack just like a cat does. The animal that Lewis saw was believed to be a wolverine. Wolverines lives from northern Canada as far south as the Northern Rockies. Wolverines have excellent senses of smell and hearing. They eat anything they find, and it is able to find food leftover by lynx, wolves, or grizzly bears. The wolverine can also release a foul-smelling musk. During the winter, it’s oversized paws serve as snowshoes. Lewis was probably wonder what the heck he was looking at because he had never seen such an animal before. At first he thought it was a wolf, but when he got closer, it looked more like a cat. Lewis was probably confused because he probably thought it was a hybrid of a wolf and cat. Lewis was probably even more shocked to see how the animal acted like a tiger. He was probably wondering where this animal got that behavior. He was probably also wondering how strong and fast the animal is.

The Teton Sioux was a tribe located near present-day Pierre, South Dakota. They were known for their aggressiveness and power, and they would demand large gifts from passing merchants. Sometimes they would resort to violent tactics. Even though the Tetons were intimidating, they had a good trade with their neighbors, Arikaras. The Arikaras were good farmers, and they gave the Teton Sioux corn. Corn was important to the survival the Teton Sioux. The Sioux lived in teepees from long wooden poles covered in bison hide.

The Sioux were not impressed with Lewis and Clark’s party, and they saw the Americans as competitors for control of trade in the region. During the first meeting, tensions rose so high, and it almost led to armed conflict, but luckily Chief Black Buffalo intervened. Over the next three days, the Tetons hosted the party. Clark kept a journal of the Teton Sioux people, and he described them as thin, small, and ill-looking people. During the team’s stay, the Tetons held many celebrations. A number of confrontations led to the end of the team’s stay. No one in the team could speak Sioux, so there was a lot of misunderstandings. After another argument, the team left and continue travelling because it almost led to into a fight.
