Family, twin and adoption studies show that the closer two individuals are genetically, the more likely that both of them will develop the same behaviours.

An example of this is the concordance rate for a mental disorder such as schizophrenia, which is about 40% for MZ twins and 7% for DZ twins. This closer similarity for individuals with the same genes shows that nature has a major contribution to the disorder.

A more holistic conceptualisation of the interaction between nature and nurture is the diathesis-stress model.

A diathesis refers to a biological vulnerability. A stress refers to an environmental stressor.

An example of this is a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia. Despite having the genes that predispose a person to developing the disorder not everyone develops it. Expression of the gene depends on experience in the form of a stressor.

This supports the role of both nature and nurture in an interactionist approach.
