A diathesis refers to a biological vulnerability. A stress refers to an environmental stressor.

An example of this is a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia. Despite having the genes that predispose a person to developing the disorder not everyone develops it. Expression of the gene depends on experience in the form of a stressor.

This supports the role of both nature and nurture in an interactionist approach.
