<title>Portia’s powerful speech expresses the purity and righteous nature of mercy. Her evocative opening simile suggests that mercy “droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven / Upon the place beneath”, and this relaxing image establishes the tenderness and compassion one shows when according mercy to another. </title>

<title>The symbolism of rain as a form of purification or baptism suggests that showing mercy is a redemptive action - it cleanses one’s soul, freeing one from sin</title>

<title>Portia further attempts to convince Shylock to show mercy in this passage by juxtaposing the strict legality of justice against the righteous nature of mercy. Again, she provides strong religious allusions by claiming that “earthly power doth show likest God’s / When mercy seasons justice.” Her simile here stresses to Shylock that mercy is more than just kindness shown between men, it is a heavenly virtue; it metaphorically “seasons justice” so that the law does not cause unnecessary hardship or punishment to any man. </title>
