Taking all of our lessons so far this week, I am going to start strengthening my weaknesses and applying my strengths to my everyday life as a learning and growing leader. The activities such as “me”, “local”, and “beyond” taught my to take things that are important to me and make them more public and relatable to others in my community and beyond, improving the aspect of leading others and being open rather than leading just myself. Legacy was another key factor of this week, and learning from videos and the James Madison Montpelier, that how you look at things (1 side stories need to be expanded) and the ways you treat others (James Madison owned slaves, which was not a good leading quality) need to be considered and changed if they are not appropriate criteria’s for being a respectful, worthy leader. Everyone is a leader, we just have to keep on learning what things are good for leading and what we can change, learning from the past and previous leaders.

As a person of color I feel like I have a responsibility to educate my community. Growing up, I developed this feeling of embarrassment and shame for being Asian. In one of the videos we saw at Montpelier, we learned that one of the biggest fears the enslaved people had, was being taken away from their family. Their families and their community are what kept them strong through all that they were put through. Growing up in a predominantly white town meant not knowing many other kids of color. I had no other Asian friends growing up, I had no one to turn to who could truly understand how hard it was for me when kids would make fun of me or put me down for being Asian. I want to be a voice for others who feel like me. I never felt like my voice was heard in Elementary and Middle school. So many emotions had built up in me over my life. Anger, frustration, sadness. Even now, I struggle with acceptance and pride. That being said, I learned how to take my frustration and anger, and turn it into something that could benefit me, and the people around me. One story is all it takes for someones idea of a person to alter. This can be a very bad and harmful thing. For me, kids always assumed that they knew who I was more than me. They hard the stereotypes in their head about Asians, and linked my face and name with them. My entire life, past, present, and future, has been, and will be affected by this single story and idea that people have about the country I was born in and the people from there. I took my real story, and used it to help people understand the other side of their "harmless" jokes about Asians... About me. I'm someone who has always been shy and quiet. I like to think that I have lots of great ideas, but I have a habit of keeping them to myself. Opening up about my past and experience with racism takes a lot of courage and strength, two things I need to work on a lot. That being said, I have come a long way and there is only going up from here. I like to take the approach of keeping an open mind when talking to people who might not have the same views as me. I think it's important that arguments aren't started so you can see who the person truly is, and why they believe in what they believe in. Having a civil and calm conversation about your differing views where no one feels attacked is important so you can truly understand and discuss your views and theirs, and grow together. In our community, I think this very important for us to do.

Reflecting on the areas that we have focused on this past week I realize how much I value the work I do in my school and my local community. I realized the importance of education and knowledge of other people in your community. One of the big take aways that I've found within this past week, and in the past few years, is how important it is to speak up for what you believe in because that's the only way real change happens. Make sure that your voice isn't overshadowing others and always remember who is telling the story.

i can apply the leadership i learned in the past week for church and charity events. My biggest example would be being a leader of the Charlottesville Albemarle crop walk. I attend the meetings to help spread the word, i stay after church to collect donations , and some years I have collected the most donations. My grandfather is in charge of everything in the walk, and one day I hope that I can be the leader of the crop walk just like him. I feel as though the team building projects helped the most with my goal , because the whole point of being the leader in this event is for a group of people to help the community , and make the world a better place .

Often across media we see leadership portrayed as being dominant and aggressive. However, this week I learned that to be a good leader, you have to listen to your followers and be gentle and understanding when talking to them. I also had fallen for the stereotype and often tried to take the lead by being strict and mean to my teammates. This week made me understand that throughout the years, I may have missed many valuable opinions and ideas that my teammates have had because I was stuck on the idea of being an aggressive leader. Therefore, in future projects, I will try to communicate openly with my teammates and be flexible in planning so that everybody will have their input applied to the project.

I don’t think I have that many strengths, but this program is teaching me how to find them and give them a good use. I think I could really use what I have learned this week in many different communities, especially my family and friends. I could try to tell them what a good leader should look like, I might that be the best at it but i must try my best.
