On a personal note, since the adoption and commercialisation of the high-iron and zinc Nyota Bean in Kenya, it has been the only red bean I consume in my household. It is climate-resilient, cooks quickly, tastes great, doesn't cause flatulence, and I know it provides the micronutrients I need most. Also, my farming relatives grow the bean, along with other high-iron varieties from the PABRA varieties. Happy 30th anniversary! Liz

PABRA is not only part of Africa’s bean research story—it is part of my own journey as a bean breeder.

I was fortunate to receive financial support from PABRA to pursue my MSc in Plant Breeding and to conduct my research experiments on common bean. That support gave me an opportunity to develop my scientific skills, conduct meaningful research, and contribute to the improvement of common bean in Ethiopia.

Today, as a young Ethiopian bean breeder, I continue to work in the same field that PABRA helped me grow in. From research plots to breeding nurseries, I see every day how collaboration, capacity building, and investment in young scientists can create lasting impact.

My story is one small chapter in the much bigger story of PABRA and African bean research. I am grateful to PABRA and all the people who have contributed to this journey.
