One theory is that Pam Reynolds was experiencing an out-of-body experience since when the test tone generator sound was played during her operation, she was able to hear it while unconscious. This is possible evidence that even unconsciously your brain and your body are still going which could lead to having an out-of-body experience (OBE). “This test outcome indicates that Pam Reynolds was well able to hear the sounds of speech and music during a period of awareness during her operation.” (Woerlee). While also being able to hear she was able to make observations during her operation and was able to recall what she experienced during the process of her ongoing operation. “This discussion of how she could hear the four episodes of veridical sounds, speech, and music is but one aspect of the explanation of her experience.” (Woerlee 20). Therefore, there is solid evidence that sometime during the operation Pam was able to recall what was happening in the room during that time and was able to make sense of her surrounding.

The second theory is Pam Reynolds jolted into an altered state of consciousness when she was going into operation. “He says when they cut into her head, she was jolted into consciousness. At that point, they had not yet drained blood from her brain.” (Hagerty) This could of lead Pam Reynolds to being semi-consciousness state and able to hear her surroundings and experience what was going on around her. It is also mentioned that Pam had the clicking earplugs in during her operation. However, it is possible that the earplugs were not fitted on her ears or that the sound transmission was going through the operating table. This would be a possibility why Pam was able to hear around her during her operation. “There are various explanations," Woerlee says. "One: that the earphones or plugs were not that tightly fitting. Two: It could have been that it was due to sound transmission through the operating table itself." (Woerlee) As such, it is possible that Pam Reynolds was in a state of semi-consciousness, which allowed her to maintain some level of awareness and take note of her environment.
