Fiver Challenge: A Year 6 Success Story

Last academic year, Chester Blue Coat decided to take on The Fiver Challenge and “give it a go.” Like many schools, we have faced financial pressures, unfortunately there was no room in the budget to fund a special treat for our Year 6 pupils as they prepared to leave for secondary school.

What better motivation for our pupils than this: whatever profit they made could be spent on an end-of-year celebration of their choosing.

Across our two Year 6 classes, the children formed 10 groups and began generating ideas. Each team set out to design a game or activity that would be both entertaining for their customers and profitable enough to raise a healthy sum. To keep things weatherproof, the games had to be suitable for indoor classrooms.

With creativity buzzing, plans were carefully drawn up and shopping lists submitted. The children researched the best value for money, sourced materials and in some cases even purchased the items themselves-proudly providing receipts like true entrepreneurs.

The big day was added to the diary, parents were invited to support and preparations began in earnest. When the morning finally arrived, the Year 6 stalls were a delight-colourful, inventive and ready for business. The whole school was timetabled to visit in slots, ensuring a steady stream of eager customers.

After a whirlwind morning of running games and counting takings, the young entrepreneurs were exhausted but thrilled. Throughout the event, they provided a running commentary of their growing profits, excitement building with every coin collected.

Finally, after the last pennies were counted and “coppered up,” the results were in: an incredible £440 had been raised! The cheers from our 57 Year 6 pupils said it all-hard work, teamwork and a spark of enterprise had paid off, funding a well-deserved end-of-year treat they could truly call their own.
