Daarnaast vertoont hij hoofs en ridderlijk gedrag uit zichzelf: hij is in ieder geval altijd dapper en vaak ook rechtvaardig en barmhartig. 

    In de Nederlandse vertalingen wordt hij veel weggelaten. Mogelijke verklaring: stilering goed/kwaad door vertaler. 'Bedoeld of onbedoeld bewerken de besnoeiingen in alle fragmenten voor Perchevael een duidelijke matiging van het naïeve karakter dat hem in de brontekst kenmerkt, en Walewein wordt eenduidiger een voorbeeldige ridder, minder genuanceerd dan bij Chrétien.' (Oppenhuis de Jong, p.77)

    In de Lancelotcompilatie is hij een belangrijk ridder van Arturs hof, maar hij blijft op de achtergrond - wellicht omdat men liever aandacht schonk aan goede Walewein, die bij Chrétien al tegenover Perceval staat als 'toonbeeld van hoofse ridderlijkheid' (Oppenhuis de Jong, p.29)
