When I don't know what to say I, I find a peer who will listen to my ideas and help me sort them into comprensible statements. When I don't feel confident in myself to succeed, I find a mirror (either physical or figurative) and take a moment to remember who I am and what I'm capable of. When I feel overwhelmed, I crawl under my desk or table; getting as close to the ground as I can and covering my head helps me to focus on my breathing, to self-soothe, and to ground myself.

Classroom culture is the prioritization of creating and maintaining a space that fosters unhindered creativity; a space that features mutual respect amongst peers; a space that acts as a moral mirror; and most importantly one that functions like a sturdy old desk- a safe place to lie as one re-collects the very best parts of oneself.

If you let your kids know you care and respect them just the way they are they will respond accordingly. They will know if you are feeding them a line or if you are sincere. Get to know them on a personal level and listen to them and offer advice when the opportunity presents itself. Basically, love them and then create and environment where they are comfortable and eager to learn.
