Believability is the foundation of credibility. It basically asks, "Is this person credible?" Being credible requires both trusting and believing what someone says to be true. You believe your doctor's medical advice to be reliable, but you are skeptical of your family member's. The same holds true for public speaking. When giving a speech, you need to be credible and your audience needs to think highly of you. Being believable requires both you and your audience to believe in you. You cannot just reflect trustworthiness onto others. Building credibility is so important while delivering a speech. Attention and engagement motivates the audience to view you as credible, which makes them more likely to be engaged. Credibility also helps your audience take you seriously and will convince them to consider the argument you’re trying to prove or teach. Perceived authority makes your audience see you authoritative on the subject, which makes them more likely to engage with your future work. If you do not have experience and are presenting on a newly-learned topic, you can prove your credibility in other ways. A speaker can raise their credibility by explaining the research they did to prepare the speech, using data points to prove their thesis in, and citing examples to fortify their argument. You can also: Talk about yourself, your interests, and why you’re qualified, Connect to your audience by speaking to them and their needs, Cite sources, show data, and tell stories, Use open and friendly body language, take your time speaking, and make eye contact and Offer to take questions at the end.
