In an effort to provide parameters around the ethical use of computers, the Computer Ethics Institute developed the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics.

The relative anonymity provided by the internet can lead individuals, including students, to behave in ways they wouldn't in face-to-face interactions. They may feel emboldened to engage in negative behavior without immediate repercussions. Also, some students may not fully empathize with the individuals they harm online, viewing them as distant and faceless entities rather than real people with feelings and rights.

Schools and educational institutions should integrate digital literacy and ethics into the curriculum from an early age. Young students should be taught about responsible online behavior, critical thinking, and the consequences of unethical actions. Channels where students can discuss their concerns, experiences, and questions related to digital ethics without fear of judgment or retaliation would also open up the conversation around online safety practices.
