Are gifted students moved up grade levels? Is this good for them socially and emotionally? I knew a student who was and is gifted in most subject areas. He moved up a grade and excelled at all of his classes and got perfect SAT scores. He was President of the Key Club where they plan volunteer work and Vice President of the Asian Club where they plan Asian awareness activities. However, when he applied to prestigious colleges they had a difficult time taking him seriously because he had a difficult time articulating what made him special and what he might do to positively impact the college. He was very surprised that none of the Ivy League colleges accepted him. Also, he was surprised how difficult college was compared to his elementary, middle and high schooling. This makes me wonder if moving him up a grade level helped him or hurt him.

Having IEP's, etc., I assume are for students who are operating below standard. Is this the way it is really? It seems to promote early, or skipping grades makes sense if the students' emotional competencies are there too. Colleges have a lot to pick from, why should they take risks on students who they know are too complicated or who they know will fail anyway?

"Colleges have a lot to pick from, why should they take risks on students who they know are too complicated or who they know will fail anyway?" David, that is an excellent question. As a college I would not pick those students either. This brings me to another question. Are students in our public schooling system being adequately prepared for college? My example, is from before Common Core. I wonder if the Common Core is working for our students.

Hello, Are students in our public school system being adequately prepared for college? I have mixed feelings about this. Sometimes, I feel that yes, due to the math, science, and literature taught in our schools students are prepared. On the other hand, I feel they could benefit from interview taking skills, and other social skills.

Yes, the "soft skills" just aren't emphasized enough. Being able to get around a math textbook is really important, but being able to navigate our real world by communicating is important too. The ability to keep schedules and stay motivated, to express one's self in a carefully crafted essay, to combine thoughts in science, math, and literature are also important.

I think the same too, David, I feel "soft skills" should be emphasized strongly. I believe in the picture that I posted, that we have a much better understanding of our world today thanks to education. Education does not only come from books, it comes from observation, experience, and immersing oneself in activities.
