There seem to be a lot of forms of communication, ranging from face-to-face and banners to more online forms of communication such as telephone, text, and even social media. Communication is an especially crucial factor for engaging Parents, and some may even argue that it is the most effective way of engagement. When I become an educator, I plan to use communication as the main way of engaging the parents of my students, as it does appear to be the most functional way. In the text Engaging All Parents in Morgan, it states “Remember, meetings don't have to be face-to-face and they do not have to take place in school. Be creative and offer variety.” Of course, these can include things like an ice cream social at a local ice cream shop, or a fun run hosted by a local charity. Events hosted by the school or by local community members that the school promotes are a wonderful way to keep the community engaged and happy. I would personally love to see more activities hosted by schools, or at least promoted by schools. When I went to school, there were no events other than an occasional football game. Activities such as storytelling workshops, a Father’s Day celebration, dinner with dads, a barbeque, and even a film club. There is a stigma in “American society” that states that dads are unable to be involved in their children’s education or really in their children’s lives at all. Activities such as helping teachers in their classrooms, helping at school fairs, being a field trip supervisor, organizing/assisting an after-school club, and so many other opportunities are available for parents to contribute a few hours of their time. Being able to have an incentive for parents to be engaged in the community is a wonderful way to get a higher turnout. Similarly, to how we use the application Presence.io at NSC, schools and other community events could use a similar application to track how active families and community members are in giving back to their communities. Of course, this may be more difficult with parents who are working full-time jobs, however, volunteering at an event during a weekend or a day off is one way of giving back. Even if volunteering time is not an option, donating money or school supplies can be another way of giving back to the local community. Being able to keep meetings short if necessary, holding online seminars and events, as well as holding weekend events are especially important. I really enjoy learning about how events impact students, either positively or negatively. Learning about what students and families liked and disliked about a certain event gives the organizers a better understanding of what they can work harder on for the next event. I personally love it when students give me feedback after the presentations that I give at their schools so that I can improve and make them more engaging for the students. This idea can be used in any form of work, but it is especially important for teachers and faculty to learn what they can do better, to make their students more engaged and families happier that their children are improving.
