At this event, we made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for homeless individuals in the community.

The origins of Occupational Therapy video was from the AOTA and is posted on their website. We watched this video in our foundations class to learn about how occupational therapy started and learn themes of the past. Something that really stuck with me was the theme of advocacy. There is so much unknown about the career by many individuals in society, that we need to stick up for the field and fight for why we matter.

Song: Northern Attitude by Noah Kahan

The song Northern Attitude is about an individual who feels isolated and has a somewhat negative outlook about their future. This song is one I listen to frequently on my drives to campus or home. I tend to have a negative outlook on myself and my abilities, which plays into my identity. I am hoping to improve this outlook by working on self-confidence to allow myself success in the field.

Although the task was something offered at the end of a TUS class for fun, only three people in total actually did the task. I wanted to include this because I felt it was a great example of individualism. In undergrad, I leaned towards following the herd in situations. I feel I've grown from this and can do things without worry of judgment. In the profession, I will aim to follow my own instincts and beliefs.

Within our Foundations course, Cat, Jaimie, and I conducted an interview with Dr. Supriya Sen. I valued this experience as we were able to receive advice and learn about her diverse background in occupational therapy. From this, I realized that as a professional, I want to travel as a career. Having the opportunity to build my background and learn more about other cultures could help with relating to patients and develop a better understanding.

In one of our courses, we were asked to bring in an item that held cultural significance. I brought in a pan my grandfather had given me. My grandfather passed away in May, and it has affected how I want to be as a practitioner and as a person. Before he passed, he loved cooking, and it was an occupation he could no longer do once he became ill. Seeing how much joy it brought him and how happy he would be when he could stand for short periods of time to help make a meal made me more understanding of how important our occupations are to our lives. As a professional, I want to treat each patient like my grandfather, and understand the true importance behind meaningful occupations and to see the joy it brings them to do them again.

Addiction has been a topic that I am not the most familiar with. This video opened up my perspective about what it is like for individuals who struggle with drug addiction. Seeing how big of an impact one's environment and family can play on why they may do things really changed my thoughts and viewpoints. Unfortunately, I always made assumptions that it was more of a selfish thought process on why someone may be continuing use of drugs.

In our Therapeutic Use of Self course, we completed an interview with an unfamiliar older adult. This interview's purpose was to work on our interview skills, become comfortable with the occupational profile, and improve our definition of occupational therapy. This interview was an incredibly positive experience for me. I never thought I would want to work with an older population, but I have found that it was joyful hearing about the life experiences of the individual. This interview also allowed me to feel more confident in my interview skills.

The jar activity was done in our Occupational Analysis course by Jared and Meghan's teaching activity. We were told to create a visual of our current schedule, then a schedule we wish to have. This activity helped me realize that although I am excited for my career, I need to take time to focus on myself. In life, the typical mindset is that work comes before all. As a professional, I want to ensure I am taking time to do the occupations I love as well as improving my career goals.
