Tess goes to a school where everyone's parents are important, you have the grandkids of a supreme court justices, the vice-president's daughter, the Major's daughter, and Tess figures out that her sister is a Fixer. What she does is she fixes important peoples problems for a living.  When Supreme Court Justice Marquette dies her new best friend Vivvie notices something suspicious. Her dad was practicing the speech that he gave about the Justice's death before he actually died.  Vivvie stays home from school and finds out that her dad called someone and that multiple people might be involved in this staged killing so Major Bharani can get money and an unknown person can become the new Justice. With the help of a couple of friends: Vivvie, Asher, Henry, and Emalia she tries to crack the case, but not before her sister finds out. Her sister, Ivy tells her to stay out of whatever is happening, but Tess can't help but notice what's happening around her and possible clues. Can Tess figure out who killed the late Justice or will the mystery remain unknown?

If you read my Windows and Mirrors box on the right you will see that Tess leads a very different life than my own, however when I put myself in her shoes it's I see how difficult it is for her.  Tess doesn't have any close family and I have always been incredibly close with my family so I can only imagine how hard it is for her to be able to have no one to count on when she needs it. I also feel empathy for her because at the beginning of the book she essentially moves in with her sister who is almost a stranger to her and has to go from living a normal life to living with secrets and being surrounded by strange new things. I have never moved to a seperate town but I can imagine how hard it would be to be thrust into all these new routines without any support. I was very happy when she found her best friend Vivvie, because then I knew she had someone she could count on.

Despite feeling  bad for Tess I also feel bad for Ivy. Ivy has to deal with Tess, and even though Tess has a right to be upset she is a not the easiest to deal with. For example when Ivy tries to make amends with Tess, Tess gives her the silent treatment. Ivy has wanted Tess to be with her all along but couldn't because it was better for Tess to live a normal life. When Ivy tries to compensate for everything she does wrong Tess just tries to make it harder for her.  I can see both sides of the story, and I can empathize for both of them even though the are on "opposing teams."

My reader's identity: This book helped me grow as a reader because I really wanted to start branching out to different genres. This mystery has encouraged me to want to read even more Jennifer Lynn Barnes books. Even though this book is very different from what I typically read, it still fits into my reading identity. Tess is a young, strong and smart female protagonist,  and in so many of my favorite books the characters are like that.  (Ex. Charlie Thorne from Charlie Thorne and the Last Equation). I also always love a good plot twist and this book a couple of them, for example the guy who actually ends up killing the Justice was a very unlikely suspect and the family dynamic really changes throughout the book. I really enjoyed reading this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a book that they can finish from cover to cover in one sitting. ]]> 2020-10-29 15:17:14 UTC https://padlet.com/26hekleb2/7q4hx0zr4cmwtivf/wish/873543245 26hekleb2 https://padlet.com/26hekleb2/7q4hx0zr4cmwtivf/wish/873681614 This book is, without a doubt, a window for me.  The protagonist Tess is brave, outspoken, and impulsive, she never lets anything get in the way of getting what she wants, for example when her sister Ivy tells her to stop trying to figure out who killed the Justice she still does it anyway because she doesn't let other people dictate her life to any extent. I usually let other people get or do what they want unless it's very important to me. She's also a troublemaker, (getting suspended from school, missing school), while I've had friends call me a goody-two shoes more times than I can count. I'm more book smart and Tess is more street smart, the list could go on and on. Furthermore, Tess doesn't have much close family, both of her grandparents on her mom's side, her grandma on her dad's side and her dad have died. The only person she has is her sister, Ivy SPOILER ALERT, SKIP IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO READ THIS BOOK, PARAGRAPH WILL RESUME BELOW (who plot twist is actually her mom)

and she hasn't really met her until she meets her in the beginning of the book, even then they aren't close because Tess has just been pulled away from her "grandpa" and she's not happy about it, so she goes on a silence strike.  I'm very close to my family so it's hard to imagine what Tess feels like. Lastly, Tess's life is very different than mine. She lives in Washington D.C. surrounded by important people such as the president, vice president etc.  The people I surround myself with are important to me but not necessarily famous, this plays a big part in the book because all these important figures play a role in how and why the Justice was killed. I'm repeating this again but I really loved this book because it was face-paced and had a depth to it that I don't always get with other books. I think that I generally did a nice job with the quality of my projects (Reader's Notebook, Wordwall, Padlet, etc.) I think that I could work on spreading out my work so that way I'm not rushing to finish it, and I also think that I could do a better job making sure that I have really specific examples from the book. I think I learned a lot from this unit, I widened my vocabulary and I learned how to empathize with my character so I could understand them on a deeper level.
