The Facts About Physical Education

In 43 states across the nation, physical education has become a mandatory part of the curriculum in schools. By incorporating physical fitness into schools, studies have also shown that districts have helped play a role in improving students' learning. In 2009, in a study conducted by both the Department of Education and the New York Health Department, it was found there there was a definite relationship between physical fitness in schools and higher academic success rates in public schools. One year later, in 2010, this point was further established in a report from the CDC. Today, of the 50 states in the nation, 41 of them require physical education for their middle-school students.

https://www.aaastateofplay.com/the-history-of-physical-education/

What Are the Goals of Physical Education?

In recent years, physical education has been falling out of its position as a staple of the traditional school day. Research not only connects regular P.E. classes with improved academic performance, but also suggests that lack of activity could be damaging children’s cardiovascular health. Despite the scientific evidence, the modern curriculum continues to impede physical education in favor of more time spent in the classroom, placing additional pressure on physical educators and school departments to optimize the time allotted towards achieving crucial fitness goals.

Three Goals of Teaching Physical Education

In schools for all ages, the physical education program is responsible for helping students learn the value of activity for health, recreation, social interaction, and more. Heres what you should aim for when outlining goals as a physical educator, or organizing a school P.E. department.

1. Teaching Essential Body Management Skills

The most well-known goal of any physical education class is to promote movement but theres more to this aspiration than breaking students out of a stationary lifestyle. P.E. classes teach children skills that they will use throughout their entire lives.

For many younger children, physical education classes offer their first chance to learn about the relationships between nutrition, exercise, and health, while acquiring basic body management skills such as:

The ability to stop and start on signal

Spatial awareness

Body part identification

Balance and control

Though these skills may not seem as crucial as literacy and numeracy, the absence of them can result in sedentary children who feel too “clumsy” to engage in any regular activity. After time, the inability to develop mature motor skills can cultivate sedentary adults, who struggle to achieve career goals or lack self-confidence.

2. Promoting Physical Fitness as Fun

Quality instruction from dedicated educators helps children develop fundamental motor patterns. But its also important for teaching students that being active can be a fun, natural habit.

The more that young students consider physical fitness a natural part of their daily schedule, the more likely they are to be engaged in fitness as they age leading to a healthier lifestyle. One in three children are overweight in America, and youngsters who enjoy physical activity are the ones most likely to be active in the future.

While physical education isnt the only factor helping children get active, it can be a useful way to help them uncover new skills and discover activities that they enjoy. By exploring a range of sports and fitness solutions, from gymnastics to running and climbing, physical educators give students a chance to find the activity that appeals most to them giving children their own personal tool in the fight against obesity.

3. Developing Teamwork, Sportsmanship, and Cooperation

Physical education allows children to experience healthy social interactions, teaching cooperation through group activities, and encouraging teamwork through identification as one part of a team. These social skills stay with children throughout their lives, increasing the chance that theyll become involved in their communities, take leadership roles, and build lasting relationships. Social skills develop confidence, contributing to academic performance and mental health.

When students are stressed, they struggle to focus and manage their emotions properly. Physical activity is a great way to relieve stress, promoting positive mental health and enhanced learning aptitude. Although reduced time for physical education is often justified as a way to help students spend more time in the classroom, studies have shown that regular activity during the school day links to higher concentration levels, more composed behavior, and happier students.

Setting Goals is Crucial

In a physical education setting, the right goals will:

Engage students in P.E. class

Attract the attention of distracted learners

Create an environment that cultivates movement

Teach the values of health and exercise

Establishing goals within physical education can also help students learn the value of setting their own personal and achievable goals in relation to their favorite activities. Teach kids about goal-setting by recording each child’s best sprint time and showing them how they improve through the year, or encouraging students with a particular interest to take their skills to the next level.

From developing motor skills for younger children to creating an environment where students can cultivate a positive attitude towards physical fitness, well-designed physical education goals will not only boost kids education, but prepare them for an active, healthy, and productive lifestyle.

Source: https://blog.schoolspecialty.com/what-are-the-goals-of-physical-education/://blog.schoolspecialty.com/what-are-the-goals-of-physical-education/

The Importance of Physical Fitness

To put it simply, physical activity and exercise is important for everyone. Children, adolescents, and adults of all ages need regular physical activity. Physical activity promotes good health, and you should stay active throughout all stages of your life regardless of your body type or BMI.

Understanding the benefits of physical fitness and knowing how active you should be can help you maintain good health and improve your overall quality of life. Here are a few benefits of regular physical activity that demonstrate the importance of physical fitness.

Save money
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic diseases cause 7 out of 10 deaths in the U.S., and treating chronic diseases accounts for 86% of U.S. healthcare costs. While some diseases cannot be prevented, you can reduce your risk for certain disease – such as heart disease and diabetes – through reducing risky behaviors and living a healthy lifestyle.

Making healthy choices, such as engaging in regular physical activity, can reduce your risk for many health issues and complications that can result in expensive medical care.

Increase your life expectancy
Numerous studies have shown that regular physical activity increases life expectancy and reduces the risk of premature mortality. There’s not a magic formula that translates hours of physical activity into hours of life gained, but research suggests that people who are more active tend to be healthier and tend to live longer.

Reduce your risk of injury
Regular exercise and physical activity increase muscle strength, bone density, flexibility, and stability. Physical fitness can reduce your risk for and resilience to accidental injuries, especially as you get older. For example, stronger muscles and better balance mean that you’re less likely to slip and fall, and stronger bones mean that your less likely to suffer bone injuries should you take a tumble.

Improve your quality of life
A sedentary lifestyle and a lack of physical activity can take a toll on a person’s body. Physical inactivity is associated with an increased risk for certain types of cancer, numerous chronic diseases, and mental health issues. Exercise, however, has been shown to improve mood and mental health, and provides numerous health benefits. Of course physical fitness also allows you to do things that you may not otherwise be able to do.

Stay active
Staying active and healthy allows you to do activities that require a certain level of physical fitness. For example, hiking to the top of a mountain is a rewarding experience that instills a sense of accomplishment and provides spectacular scenery, but there are people who cannot experience this due to fitness limitations.

But even walking around the zoo with your family or playing on the playground with your children can be challenging for those who neglect physical activity for extended periods of time. Being active means that it’s easier to stay active as you get older.

Improve your health
There are numerous health advantages to physical fitness. Regular exercise and physical activity promotes strong muscles and bones. It improves respiratory, cardiovascular health, and overall health. Staying active can also help you maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and reduce your risk for some cancers.

In other words, staying active is a crucial part of maintaining good health and wellness.

Here are the CDC physical activity guidelines for children, adults, adults over 65, and pregnant or postpartum women.

Encourage your family to be more active, and challenge yourself to meet daily or weekly physical activity goals. Play outdoor sports with the whole family, schedule time each day to go to the gym, or pick up healthy, active hobbies like hiking or cycling. National Physical Fitness and Sports Month is a great time to get more active, but don’t stop at the end of the month. Make exercise and physical activity a permanent part of your daily routine!

https://www.mana.md/the-importance-of-physical-fitness/

How Physical Education in Schools Benefits Students

by Saul Wagner

Physical Education in Schools Boosts Academic Performance

The benefits of physical education in schools are far-reaching, including both increased student physical health and better academic performance. Conversely, a lack of physical activity among youth is known to increase the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more. By promoting physical education (P.E.) in schools, educators are in a prime position to help students establish life-long healthy behavior patterns and boost scholastic success.

Physical Activity Benefits

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends 60 minutes of daily physical activity for youth aged 6–17 years, while research shows that behavior habits established during childhood often prevail into adulthood. Regular physical activity during youth is known to have the following benefits:

Builds healthy bones

Improves strength and endurance

Reduces stress and anxiety

Helps control weight/reduces the risk of obesity

Improves blood pressure and cholesterol levels

Reduces feelings of depression

Boosts self-esteem

Promotes psychological well-being

Effects of Physical Education on Learning

In addition, physical education in schools has been shown to have positive effects upon learning, including:

Increased concentration

Increased attentiveness in class

Better grades

Better behavior

Student Participation in P.E. Classes

Yet despite the inherent rewards, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that participation in physical education classes among students has been steadily declining, with only 24% of grade 12 students attending physical education classes, down from only 41% of grade 9 students. This is especially troubling given that insufficient physical activity is one of the top health risk behaviors contributing to adolescent and teenage death and injury, along with tobacco, drug, and alcohol use, unhealthy diet, and injurious/violent behaviors.

On the positive side, research studies show that a mere 20 minutes of walking affects brain functioning, helping to stimulate students’ minds and improve academic success. Not only has a strong correlation been found between high fitness scores and high academic scores, but children who participate in P.E. are more likely to remain active during after-school hours.

How to Promote Physical Education in Children

The following are some of the ways educators can promote physical education both inside and outside the classroom:

Incorporate classroom-based physical activities

Encourage physical activities during recess

Provide physical education taught by a qualified PE teacher to all students

Invest in athletic and gym equipment

Sponsor school sports teams

Promote interscholastic sports

Share community sports facilities

Work with communities to provide after-school physical activity programs for children and teens

The old adage that ‘an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’ puts the obligation directly on school health programs to reduce the incidence of student risky behaviors and increase the odds of academic success by promoting physical education at all grade levels. Investing in students’ physical health today will allow them to reap the rich rewards far into the future.

We believe in these and are adding a few more:

Healthy For Life -Kids who have quality PE are taught life skills (see above) than can be used forever.

Reduced Healthcare Costs - We have more of a 'sick-care' system than healthcare. One of the best ways to prevent 'sick-care' expenses to have real healthcare. PE is true healthcare and prevention. As been mentioned "Prevention is Better than a Cure".

Physical Education Captures Everyone - Recess is nice. So are after school programs but lets not just get the kids active who want to be active. Physical education gets every child conditioned to live a healthy life.

PE Gets Kids Active...Outside of School - Look at the charts below from the USA. Adults who had PE are twice as likely to active later in life. Kids who have PE are 3-4 times more likely to active outside of school

It Is Harder To Condition Adults - Habits and conditioning early in one's life is a lot easier than "teaching an old dog new tricks". Let's condition activity into every kids resources that then can use forever

The Academic Payoff - The research and evidence is overwhelming. Kids who are active are better students period. Look at this document for all the research we have accumulated to date. And look at the study of 3 million children below. Fitness = Better Academics!

Source: www.phitworld.org

In recognition of these health benefits, physical activity guidelines for children and youth have been developed by the Health Education Authority [now Health Development Agency (HDA). The primary recommendation advocates the accumulation of 1 hour's physical activity per day of at least moderate intensity (i.e. the equivalent of brisk walking), through lifestyle, recreational and structured activity forms.

What's the point of all of those physical education (PE) classes we've all taken? Sure we got to have some fun playing sports but was that all there was to it? Of course not. The philosophy behind physical education entails principles that teach students the mechanics of physical activity, why it's important, and how they can and should remain physically active on their own.

It goes much deeper than that, of course. Underlying this outward manifestation of physical education is the understanding that if students learn all of this and apply it, it will benefit them tremendously in terms of physical and mental well-being. This will, in turn, benefit the entire nation since healthier people do not take up as many healthcare resources.

Clearly, good physical education affects the health and economics of individuals and an entire nation. So why don't we take a closer look at the goals, purposes, and current trends of physical education.

https://study.com/academy/lesson/goals-philosophies-of-physical-education.html#:~:text=The%20philosophy%20behind%20physical%20education%20entails%20principles%20that%20teach%20students,physically%20active%20on%20their%20own.&text=Clearly%2C%20good%20physical%20education%20affects,individuals%20and%20an%20entire%20nation.

5 COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS

The 5 components of physical fitness are often used in our school systems, health clubs and fitness centers to gauge how good a shape we are truly in. The 5 components that make up total fitness are:

Cardiovascular Endurance

Muscular Strength

Muscular endurance

Flexibility

Body Composition

Total fitness can be defined by how well the body performs in each one of the components of physical fitness as a whole. It is not enough to be able to bench press your body weight. You also need to determine how well you can handle running a mile etc.

A closer look at the individual components:

Cardiovascular endurance is the ability of the heart and lungs to work together to provide the needed oxygen and fuel to the body during sustained workloads. Examples would be jogging, cycling and swimming. The Cooper Run is used most often to test cardiovascular endurance.

Muscular strength is the amount of force a muscle can produce. Examples would be the bench press, leg press or bicep curl. The push up test is most often used to test muscular strength.

Muscular endurance is the ability of the muscles to perform continuous without fatiguing. Examples would be cycling, step machines and elliptical machines. The sit up test is most often used to test muscular endurance.

Flexibility is the ability of each joint to move through the available range of motion for a specific joint. Examples would be stretching individual muscles or the ability to perform certain functional movements such as the lunge. The sit and reach test is most often used to test flexibility.

Body composition is the amount of fat mass compared to lean muscle mass, bone and organs. This can be measured using underwater weighing, Skinfold readings, and bioelectrical impedance. Underwater weighing is considered the “gold standard” for body fat measurement, however because of the size and expense of the equipment needed very few places are set up to do this kind of measurement.

www.lifetime-fitness-routines.com

Health benefits from regular exercise include: stronger muscles and bones, increased coordination and energy, and decreased risk of developing chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. For most kids, exercise means being physically active during play, recess, and physical education class, also known as P.E. Physical education contributes to each child's total growth and development.

Physical education is a course taught in school that focuses on developing physical fitness and the ability to perform and enjoy day-to-day physical activities with ease. Kids also develop skills necessary to participate in a wide range of activities, such as soccer, basketball, or swimming. Regular physical education classes prepare kids to be physically and mentally active, fit, and healthy into adulthood. An effective physical education program should include engaging lessons, trained P.E. teachers, adequate instructional periods, and student evaluation.

Physical education helps students develop physical skills and confidence. For example, elementary and middle school curriculum includes activities that help kids obtain and improve skills, such as running, catching, throwing, and striking, applicable to sports such as baseball, volleyball, or karate. Balancing skills could be applied to dance or gymnastics.

High school curriculum should focus on lifetime sports skills like tennis or aerobic dance, with a secondary emphasis on team sports.

Physical education develops fitness and fosters the desire for lifelong participation in physical activity. high school curriculum prepares students to become highly proficient in one or more sport and/or fitness activity of their choice.

Physical education classes teach the health benefits of regular exercise and healthy food choices along with the risks of inactivity and poor diet. Students of all ages might be asked to dedicate themselves to making a few small improvements in diet and exercise for a period of six weeks. They would be expected to journal about how they feel during the process and reflect on how these changes affect performance and mood.

Physical education also helps students develop social skills. For example, team sports help them learn to respect others, contribute to a team goal, and socialize as a productive member of a team.

https://www.nordangliaeducation.com/our-schools/abu-dhabi/learning/sport-and-physical-education/physical-education/the-importance-of-physical-education

https://study.com/academy/lesson/what-is-physical-education-definition-overview.html

Saralde, Dennoel Mar V.

The Benefits of Physical Education: How Innovative Teachers Help Students Thrive
by Heather Nelson
For students in elementary, middle, or high school, the long-term benefits of physical education classes are not always evident—but strong teachers with innovative ideas are changing that. These educators find creative and evidence-based ways to help students tune into their bodies, minds, and attitudes.

Here’s a look at the benefits of physical education programs, how educators design their lessons to bring out the best in their students, and what the future may bring to this space.

Advantages of Physical Education
The benefits associated with physical education programming go far beyond accomplishments made in the gym. When students have the opportunity to step away from their desks and move their bodies in a physical education class, they gain the benefits of mental health support, stress relief, heart health, and more.

The Institute of Medicine reported that physically active students are more focused, better retain information, and problem-solve more successfully than their less active peers. While the benefits of physical education are clear, ensuring students get the most from P.E. comes down to innovative and well-trained educators.

Innovation in Physical Education for Today’s Classroom
When most people think of physical education, they think of running laps and climbing a rope in the middle of the school gym. However, the most effective physical education teachers know there’s much more to P.E. than jogging and climbing.

Andrew Alstot, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at Azusa Pacific University, explained that “good physical educators create comprehensive educational programs that go beyond simply getting kids physically active.” He said he encourages teachers to expose students to various physical activities, which helps them find activities they love.

The goal is to help students grow and to provide positive feedback and guidance so that they become comfortable participating in physical activity outside of school. One way teachers do this is through tailored lessons, ensuring activities are accessible yet challenging for each student.

Keep Reading: Here’s What to Do with a Kinesiology Degree
Greg Bellinder, M.S., assistant professor at APU, teaches future physical educators to differentiate their instruction to meet the individual needs of all students— a method called Universal Design for Learning (UDL). He explained what this might look like in the classroom:

“Consider a warm-up jog at the beginning of a lesson. The classic approach required all students to jog a lap around the track. Depending on ability level, some students finished in about two minutes and waited much longer than that until the very last students finished. During this downtime, slower students were embarrassed, knowing the rest of the class was waiting for them. Taking a UDL approach, a physical educator would create a warm-up circle with a much smaller radius. Instead of requiring students to run the same distance, she or he would have them jog as many laps around the smaller circle in a set time, challenging each student to complete a number of laps that are personally challenging. At the end of four minutes, for instance, everyone stops jogging. The faster students have been challenged at their level while the slower students have been challenged at their level. No student has been stigmatized. The teacher now has additional instructional minutes for skill-based instruction.”
Innovative physical education means meeting students at their level, providing guidance to strengthen skills, and instilling a lifetime love of movement. As instructors look to the future, including these innovative lessons in their curriculum can pave the way for students to embrace physical education.

The Future of Physical Education
The future of physical education is not only physical! APU’s Janna Sanchez, M.S., said educators have the unique responsibility to shift the focus from physical competition and winning to the discoveries that can be made through activity and play. By tapping into students’ capabilities and strengths, physical educators can do more than simply teach a sport, she said.

“Physical education programs should not be based on sports alone, but on positive movement opportunities that enhance self-esteem, worth, dignity, and self-discipline,” said Sanchez. “A child is able to capitalize on their own personal strengths and learn from their weaknesses when they comprehend how to work with others in a variety of settings. That is what physical education and play are all about.”

Keep Reading: Want to Impact the Health of Children? Here’s Why a Physical Education Degree with Fieldwork Is Crucial
The best physical education programs provide space for students to develop their bodies and minds—and the future of P.E. is continuing further in that direction. With teachers committed to creating lesson plans that strengthen students from the inside out, the days of dreading gym class may be coming to an end.

Institute of Medicine

Andrew Alstot, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology

Here’s What to Do with a Kinesiology Degree

Greg Bellinder, M.S., assistant professor

Watch Now: Meet the Faculty: Greg Bellinder, M.S.

Instilling a lifetime love of movement

https://www.apu.edu/articles/the-benefits-of-physical-education-how-innovative-teachers-help-students-thrive/

ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF A QUALITY PHYSICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM

BY: AARON BEIGHLE and ROBERT P. PANGRAZI.

Physical education teachers must make sure that students receive a quality physical education experience that results in student learning. To do this, programs must be guided by current research, thinking, and philosophy. One of the unique characteristics of physical education is that it is informed by many other disciplines. The information and curriculum provided in this book are deeply grounded in research from exercise physiology, psychology, motor control, and pedagogy and teaching. All these disciplines, and others, are interwoven to provide students with a quality physical education experience designed to teach students skills, provide them knowledge, and develop positive attitudes toward all physical activity. Again, a strength of physical education is that it applies the evidence from a variety of areas to provide evidence-based practice. This is a complex and difficult task that physical educators must implement for the benefit of youth.

Based on this large body of evidence from many areas, quality physical education programs must address several essential components that interlock to form a program that will be valued by parents, teachers, and students. Each component is described briefly here, whereas in-depth coverage is provided in the chapters referenced under each point.

Quality physical education programs are organized around content standards that offer direction and continuity to instruction and evaluation. A quality program is driven by a set of content standards. These standards are defined by various competencies that children are expected to accomplish. Standards are measurable so that both teachers and students know when progress has been made. Comprehensive physical education content standards are presented later in this chapter. (Chapter 8 offers some strategies for teachers who evaluate whether they and their students are meeting the standards.)

Quality programs are student-centered and based on the developmental urges, characteristics, and interests of students. Children learn best when the skills and activities they must learn match their physical and emotional development. Including activities in the program because they match the teacher's competencies—but not the students' needs—is unacceptable. Teachers must teach new activities outside their comfort zone to present a comprehensive program. (Chapter 4 discusses the urges, characteristics, and interests of children and the way that they affect the creation of a quality physical education program. Chapter 6 offers many ideas for understanding and teaching to the personal needs of students.) A quality program focuses on the successes of students so that they are motivated to continue. Developing positive behaviors toward physical activity is a key goal of physical education. (Chapter 6 also discusses essential elements of teaching and ways to give children positive reinforcement in learning situations.)

Quality physical education programs make physical activity, physical fitness, and motor-skills development the core of the program. Physical education is the only place in the entire school curriculum where students learn motor skills. Therefore, the physical education program must focus on students' skill development and quality physical activity. As part of the physical activity umbrella, students learn the knowledge and skills needed to achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. (Chapters 2 and 3 explain the importance of physical activity and fitness for children's optimal growth and development.)

Quality physical education programs teach management skills and self-discipline. Physical education teachers are often evaluated based on how students behave in their classes rather than on how much their students know about physical education. Administrators and parents look to see whether students are on task and receiving competent instruction. When a class is well managed and students work with self-discipline, the experience compares aligns with classroom instruction, bringing credibility to the program. (Chapter 7 suggests many methods for managing a classroom and promoting self-discipline.)

Quality programs include all students. Instruction is designed for students who need help the most—namely, less-skilled students and children with disabilities. Students who are skilled and blessed with innate ability have many opportunities to learn during private lessons, clubs, and programs. Unskilled students or children with disabilities lack confidence and often cannot help themselves. Physical education may be the last opportunity these children will have to learn skills in a caring, positive environment. Instruction designed to include and encourage the less-skilled and less-motivated children will ensure a positive and successful experience. Students who are not naturally gifted must perceive themselves as successful if they are to enjoy and value physical activity. (Chapter 9 focuses on dealing with children who have disabilities and modifying activities so that all children can succeed.)

Quality physical education programs focus instruction on the process of learning skills rather than on the product or outcome of performing the skill. When students are learning new motor skills, they should learn proper techniques first and then focus on the product of performing the skill. Put another way, it is more important to teach children to catch a beanbag properly than it is to worry about how many they catch or miss. (Chapter 5 suggests strategies for optimizing skill learning.Chapter 8 examines when to focus on the process or product evaluation of motor skills.)

Quality physical education programs teach lifetime activities that students can use to improve their health and personal wellness. Children are prepared to participate in activities they can continue to engage in when they become adults. The most popular activities for adults are outdoor activities, individual sports, and fitness activities and not as many team sports as one might think (Physical Activity Council, 2013). Specifically, activities such as stretching exercises, bicycling, strength development exercises, jogging, swimming, and aerobics are popular with adults. By far, walking is the activity most often reported in adulthood. Quality physical education looks to the future and offers activities that children can enjoy and use as adults. (Chapter 3 emphasizes the importance of teaching lifetime physical activity skills and describes ways to teach wellness and develop a healthy lifestyle.)

Quality programs teach social and personal responsibility, including addressing social and emotional learning, gender, and diversity issues. Physical education is an effective laboratory for students to learn and apply social skills such as cooperation and communication. In addition, it lends itself to teaching skills associated with relationship building and conflict resolution. (Chapter 6 offers strategies for dealing with gender and diversity issues. Chapter 19 includes activities exploring diverse cultures through dance.)

Source:
https://us.humankinetics.com/blogs/excerpt/essential-components-of-a-quality-physical-education-program

Why Physical Education Is Necessary For Every Student
Originally published July 6, 2018 by HeroicHollywood.com.
Students get a lot of benefits from physical education classes. P.E. classes can help students to become more aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The students can also retain a higher level of knowledge as a result of the overall health. This knowledge can help them to make wise decisions concerning their safety, health, and wellbeing.

Here are ways in which physical education can help to improve the life of the students.
Physical fitness of the student
Physical fitness can be a key component of a healthy lifestyle. This is why P.E. is a key subject in all the leading universities in the world. When regular fitness activities are included in the lifestyle of a student, it is possible for them to maintain fit. Regular physical activity can help to improve the absorption of nutrients in the body. It also helps to improve cardiovascular health and develop muscular strength.
The heart plays an important role in pumping blood to the entire body. When students remain inactive throughout the day, they can be at a risk of various cardiovascular issues. Unlike adults, children don’t have to spend a lot of their time in the gym to get the adequate amount of workout. All they need is ample playtime and running around the field.
Improvement of academic performance
There are studies that show that P.E. can help to improve the academic performance of a student. Many of the regular physical activities that students engage in are associated with higher levels of concentration and well-composed behaviors. Sports activities help to reinforce knowledge learned in other subjects. For instance, one of the benefits of P.E. includes helping students to do better in social studies.
Social assimilation
The activities that children engage in during P.E. can help in the improvement of social interaction. From the time they are young, kids learn how to cooperate through various group activities and from a team’s positive sense of identity. These kinds of social activities continue to play an important role in the growth of a student. For instance, sports can be used to engage young people and instill positive characters in them. Students have the opportunity to take leadership roles in sports activities and this helps them to develop leadership skills.
Reduces the levels of stress
According to https://edubirdie.com/write-my-essay, many school curriculums lay emphasis on core subjects. Students are pressurized to perform better in these subjects. Even after spending hours in the classroom, they get a lot of homework to tackle away from the student. This means that they have no or little time to play at home as they have to do their homework. This causes a lot of stress to the children as they are supposed to spend so many hours studying. This is despite the fact that playtime is one of the ways of releasing stress. Therefore, physical activity can be an outlet for getting rid of stress and anxiety. It can also facilitate emotional resilience and stability.
Helps students focus
If you don’t take time off from your job, you will realize that it can be hard to focus. This can also happen to kids. They require more than one break in a day if they focus their attention on books. This is why physical education is necessary. When students engage in P.E., they are able to burn the excess pent up energy. Pent up energy is often what leaves them fidgeting and without paying attention in the classroom.
Learn the importance of working out
Students usually learn by observing others. They require someone who can act as a role model and help them to exercise. P.E. is a good way of teaching your children the need for exercising on a daily basis. Like we have already noted P.E. introduces students to a wide range of exercises. This way, they learn about the different physical activities that they can easily enjoy. Young students such as first-graders and pre-schoolers will love participating in physical activities when an element of fun is added to the sports.
Health and nutrition
Nutrition is one of the elements of P.E. One of the key benefits of P.E. is that it helps students to understand the importance of proper nutrition. This is particularly important in high school as this is where eating disorders and obesity prevails. With physical education and health, students understand the importance of eating well and the key nutrition guidelines.
Instill positive behaviors
The moral development of a student can be impacted by quality physical education. With P.E., students get the opportunity to work as a team, question actions by their peers and accept responsibilities for their own actions.
When students are idle, they can easily be initiated in negative behaviors such as drug abuse. On the other hand, when students find a hobby in a sport, it keeps them engaged throughout their school lives. P.E can therefore help to supplement the improving value system of the learner. Students will also understand how to use their time well.
Final thoughts
It is clear that physical education plays a key role in the development of a student life. There are various factors that should be considered in the development of sports activities. One of these is the age of the student. It is important for a physical educator to help learners make the right choice of physical activities either now or in the future. Therefore, there are some good reasons for why physical education should be incorporated into the school’s curriculum.
https://ihtusa.com/why-physical-education-is-necessary-for-every-student/

PHILIPPINE PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN THE INFORMATION AGE: MAJOR UPGRADE NEEDED

Physical education (PE) in the Philippines has seen a significant decline, having taken a backseat when it comes to national priority, as well as being severely affected by the onset of a rapidly changing youth culture immersed in mobile technology and social media.

Necessary steps have been taken, but other countries have gone beyond the usual actions by integrating progressive physical education concepts into their curriculum as part of a holistic learning experience, rather than as a strictly separate course. For example in Finland, teachers are mandated by school administrators to integrate outdoor activity to their lessons, in contrast to forcing the students to bury their faces in textbooks and test papers most of the time.

Another progressive concept that local physical education could use as part of its reform is the concept of “gamification” that is being used by many educational institutions in the West. The recent popularity of mobile games like Ingress and Pokémon GO should give educators ideas on how to further exploit new technologies to improve school PE programs. Rather than look at video-gaming as a deterrent to physical activity, even to the point of banning them in some schools, administrators and teachers can consider integrating the use of devices like the Nintendo Wii to their school programs. And while this can never replace actual physical activity, it goes without saying that educators should take advantage of young people’s enthusiasm for technology to get them moving physically.

PE expert Dylan Blain from the University of Wales confirms the need for the integration of physical education with modern tech. In an interview with The Guardian’s Martin Williams, Mr. Blain notes, “Many children are living sedentary lives. At home they might spend lots of time playing on their games consoles, so an hour or two of physical education (PE) every week isn’t going to be enough to reach the recommended activity level. We need to try to get some kind of transference from PE so they do things outside school—and I think technology can play a role in that.”

All the recent analyses and research work done by fitness educators have produced overwhelming evidence that technology is very useful in making people get into physical activity by integrating it into familiar tools or objects rather than introducing them separately. Latest devices such as Kinect uses video, music, and motion sensors to attract people into a physically-engaging and fun activity, all while not aware that they are exercising. The challenge for educators is to make physical education current, relevant, technologically-savvy, inclusive, and globally-competitive.

And that is only one aspect of how physical education can be improved. Other issues that should be addressed may revolve around not just a curriculum upgrade, but also overall impact towards health and total well-being of individuals. A fine example is bringing to light the increasing cases of obesity and early occurrence of weight-related illnesses such as diabetes among young people. Such pressing issues need a proper venue, where parties directly involved can gather together, discuss, and come up with solutions to enhance the industry’s role in society.

Reference :
http://sportphil.com/philippine-physical-education-information-age/

A Brief History of Sports

The documented history of sports goes back at least 3,000 years. In the beginning, sports often involved the preparation for war or training as a hunter, which explains why so many early games involved the throwing of spears, stakes, and rocks, and sparring one-on-one with opponents.

With the first Olympic Games in 776 BC—which included events such as foot and chariot races, wrestling, jumping, and discus and javelin throwing—the Ancient Greeks introduced formal sports to the world. The following by no means exhaustive list takes a look at the beginnings and evolution of some of today's most popular sporting pastimes.

Cricket: The game of cricket originated in south-east England sometime in the late 16th century. By the 18th century, it had become the national sport, making inroads globally in the 19th and 20th centuries. The prototype for the modern cricket bat featuring a willow blade and a cane handle layered with strips of rubber, and then tied with twine and covered with another layer of rubber to form a grip was invented around 1853. (The longest recorded game of cricket took place in 1939 and spanned a period of nine days.)
Baseball: Alexander Cartwright (1820-1892) of New York invented the baseball field as we know it in 1845. Cartwright and the members of his New York Knickerbocker Base Ball Club devised the first rules and regulations that became the accepted standard for the modern game of baseball.

Softball: In 1887, George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, invented softball as a form of indoor baseball that was first played on a cold winter day inside the warm Farragut Boat Club.

Basketball: Softball: In 1887, George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, invented softball as a form of indoor baseball that was first played on a cold winter day inside the warm Farragut Boat Club.

Rugby: The origins of rugby can be traced back over 2000 years to a Roman game called harpastum (from the Greek for “seize”). Unlike soccer, in which the ball was propelled by means of the foot, in this game, it was also carried in the hands. The game made its modern debut in 1749 at a newly built school in Rugby in Warwickshire, England, which boasted “every accommodation that could be required for the exercise of young gentlemen.” The eight-acre plot on which the game evolved was known as "The Close." Between 1749 and 1823, rugby had few rules and the ball was kicked rather than carried to move it forward. Games could go on for five days and often more than 200 students participated. In 1823, player William Webb Ellis was the first to took pick up the ball and run with it. This was the beginning of the modern version of the sport as it’s played today.
Football: American football is a descendant of rugby and soccer. While Rutgers and Princeton played what was then billed as the first college football game on November 6, 1869, the game did not come into its own until 1879 with rules instituted by Walter Camp, a player/coach at Yale University. On November 12, 1892, in a game that pitted the Allegheny Athletic Association football team against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club, AAA player William (Pudge) Heffelfinger was paid $500 to participate—marking him as the first-ever professional football player.

Dela Fuente, Clenton

The advantages of physical education in the schools are many and well-documented: P.E. helps kids learn healthy habits, stay in shape and learn teamwork. However, an argument could be made that a P.E. program simply isn't worth the trouble. The drawbacks of P.E. get much less attention than the benefits, but should nevertheless be taken into consideration.

Expense
In these lean economic times, when many school programs are getting the axe and some districts are even laying off teachers, the expense of holding P.E. classes may cause some schools to reconsider whether the class is worth it. The cost and maintenance of equipment, plus the upkeep of a huge gym, may be money that's better spent on retaining talented teachers or fundamental academic programs.

In addition, many school districts and administrators base budget choices on the programs that are most important to students and parents: usually those academic subjects that are measured on standardized testing. Subjects like P.E., while important for overall health, are often left on the chopping block in order to fund academic subjects when school budgets are tight.

Uneven Results
Many adults remember P.E. as the class that was either too easy, or sheer torment, depending on how athletic they were as kids. Coaches are often criticized for "phoning in" the P.E. curriculum, with the result that athletic kids aren't challenged, and non-athletic kids are either ignored, or worse, singled out for ridicule because the coach is too apathetic to take control of the class. As schools may more attention than ever to bullying, it can be easier to just remove the chance for taunting in gym class.

Lack of Choice
Many kids take part in P.E. only because it's a requirement and there is no choice. Being forced to participate -- especially in sports children don't prefer or may not feel able to perform -- makes the experience a drudgery and may actually make them less likely to exercise outside the school setting. Some educators advise that schools allow students some choice in P.E. activities to avoid making exercise seem like a hated necessity, rather than healthy and fun. Absent this choice, P.E. may actually have the opposite effect than the one the school intended.

Liability
P.E. classes can expose the school to a lawsuit if a child is injured or dies, especially if the incident resulted from faulty equipment, or while the class was being taught by a substitute teacher. Some children, particularly those with a pre-existing condition or who are significantly overweight, may be subject to injury when forced to participate in sudden, strenuous activity. Mandatory exercise that takes place in a very hot or cold environment can also trigger health crises in susceptible children. This is especially true for children with conditions like asthma and other health issues that are becoming more common in schools today.
