*Golding uses Simon as a character to show how Simon is becoming braver as time passes on the island.

"Simon, sitting between the twins and Piggy, wiped his mouth and shoved his piece of meat over the rocks to Piggy who grabbed it. The twins giggles and Simon lowered his face in shame."(Golding 74)

"Simon became inarticulate in his effort to express mankind's essential illness. Inspiration came to him. What's the dirtiest thing there is?"(Golding 89)

This is significant because it show how Simon is slowly becoming braver in page 74 he is shameful of what he does, then in page 89 he is braver to ask the question he has without being shameful.

*There is always a need for social order when there is a crisis.

"The vivid horror of this, so possible and so nakedly terrifying, held them all silent,"(Golding 85) This quote shows the fear of the boys and illustrates that there was a crisis at hand.

"Not scared so much as paralyzed; hung up there immovable on the top of a diminishing, moving mountain,"(Golding 123) In this quote, the boys were so frightened that they barely knew what to do. They were in mental shock and this made them freak out, so they needed social order before there was too much chaos.

This picture represents fear, and because the boys were scared and in a crisis they needed social order.

*Golding uses Piggy as a character in order to show intelligence and responsibility. He is significant to the theme because he truly feels that there is a need for social order and tries to get the boys to collaborate and work together during the crisis.

"Once more that evening Ralph had to adjust his values. Piggy could think. He could go step by step inside that fat head of his, only Piggy was no chief. But Piggy, for all his ludicrous body, had brains. Ralph was a specialist in thought now, and could recognize thought in another." (Golding, 78)
This is when Ralph calls a meeting after feasting on the pig Jack caught. Ralph was angry at not keeping the fire ablaze while they went to go hunt, therefore, the boys missed an opportunity to get rescued. This quote is describing Piggy and what his desires are in order to survive on this island. Ralph is seeing that Piggy is very smart, except he isn't the leader. This shows how Piggy is intelligently superior who could could get the kids out of trouble, but without collaboration from the other boys because he couldn't lead people due to his physical appearance, there was no hope for his desire for social order.

"Piggy saw the smile and misinterpreted it as friendliness. There had grown up tacitly among the biguns the opinion that Piggy was an outsider, not only by accent, which did not matter, but by fat, his ass-mar, and specs, and a certain disinclination for manual labor. Now finding that something he had said made Ralph smile , he rejoiced and pressed his advantage." (Golding, 65) This is when Piggy is picking things on the shore and suggests to make a Sundial to keep track of time. This shows how Piggy and Ralph have gotten a closer relationship toward one another. Also, it shows that Piggy is being more confident in order to present new ideas toward other people even though no one does not like him much except Ralph. It also shows curiosity side of Piggy as he is searching for things to make stuff into. He has a very creative mind to show that he has intelligence to lead and attempt to force the boys to collaborate in order to benefit himself as a person and for the boys themselves.

*Golding uses fire as a symbol for collaboration and cooperation in order to illustrate that in times of need i's important to work together

"They let the bloody fire go out,"(Golding 68) Thes quote is said by Ralph when the fire goes out the first time and he is very upset that the hunters were not responsible enough. This required the boys to work together and bond in order to start the fire back up again.

"We've got to make smoke up there--or die,"(Golding 81) This quote illustrates how hectic it is when the fire is out. Without a fire, they are in danger. They need social order in order to communicate and restart the fire.

We chose this image of a fire because that was the symbol in which we chose.
