How did Elizabethan women have achieve their pale skin with the make-up available at the time? Elizabeth I, who was emulated by her people, wore white make-up. The alabaster coloured skin was a sign of wealth and considered very beautiful. In fact, it covered signs of disease, pockmarks, and the manifestations of ageing skin. In order to achieve this look, women used a foundation colour made from lead and vinegar. It was poisonous and eventually more harmful than help to the skin. After the base colour, raw egg white was often applied as a 'glaze'! The cheeks and lips were rouged with cochineal, applied with pads of animal hide and rabbit's foot brushes. It was fashionable to severely pluck the eyebrows and also the front hairline; with all shades of red hair being immensely popular.

In 1558, King Philip II of Spain's second wife, Queen Mary I of England, died. They had wed in July 1554, a year after Mary's accession to the English throne, but the English Parliament had refused to grant him much real power as co-monarch of England. On Mary's death he had tried unsuccessfully to persuade her sister and successor, Elizabeth I, to marry him, but she would not agree.Phillip decided to take revenge. With the Pope's blessing, he launched the Spanish Armada to attack England, Protestantism, and Elizabeth herself. Sir Walter Raleigh, whom the Queen loved, married Elizabeth Throckmorton, a ward of Elizabeth's court, after learning she was carrying his child. Elizabeth I had both of them arrested, imprisoned in the Tower of London, and some time later released them.

The events depicted in The Lost Colony took place during the Elizabethan era in England. The term, “Elizabethan Era” refers to the English history of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign (1558–1603). Historians often depict it as the golden age in English history and it’s been widely romanticised in books, movies, plays, and TV series. The Elizabethan age is considered to be a time of English renaissance that inspired national pride through classical ideals, international expansion, and naval triumph.
This English Renaissance saw the flowering of poetry, music and literature. The era is most famous for theatre, as William Shakespeare and many others composed plays that we still read and watch today. It was also an age of exploration and expansion abroad to establish colonies under English rule across the globe, including in The New World, to further England’s empire.
