To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing on behalf of Kim Marshall. Kim and I have worked together for the 5 years that she has been an art educator at Woodland Academy. During that time, I have come to know her as being undeniably dedicated, passionate about her work, and innovative in her approach to her students and the projects she undertakes.

In our time working together, Kim has single-handedly spearheaded several major projects at Woodland Academy. She has been the driving force behind countless art shows, family events, grant applications, and other school initiatives. She has taken the lead on planning, delegating, and implementing these projects, and they have ultimately strengthened the culture in our school, our ties with the community, and the confidence of our students, parents, and staff. She is a master organizer and delegator, and her passion is infectious.

Kim has consistently woven her innovative thinking into everything she does. She has created projects for students that encourage the integration of technology, literature, music, and self-reflection. She has created an environment that allows students to find their creativity, explore it, master it, and then demonstrate it without limitation.

It is for all of these reasons that I highly recommend Kim Marshall. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me.

Warmly,

Johanna M. Spears

January 14, 2019

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to provide my highest recommendation for Kim Marshall to be considered for an art teacher at your school. Kim has an exceptional commitment to education and visual art in addition to her fervor for improving her own professional practice.
I have worked with Kim in the professional setting for 2 years as the facilitator of a Professional Learning Community (PLC) organized by the Worcester Public Schools Visual Art Department and in collaboration with VSA of Massachusetts. Our PLC was focused on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in the Visual Arts. We met once a week for an hour and 3 times a year for a 6-hour intensive course. Each week there was a rigorous assignment related to classroom instruction with supplementary reading. Kim was consistently a leader within our PLC, as she volunteered to present best practices as well as share problems of practice. She sought feedback from peers, accepted critical responses, reflected on her work, and would actively make improvements to her teaching and presenting. She was often the first person in the class to volunteer to lead a discussion, plan a break-out session, or make a suggestion to improve the structure of the course. Outside of class, Kim reached out to me on several occasions seeking advice on how to further improve her own instruction. It was obvious that the course was not a box to be checked for professional development as she frequently far exceeded the course’s expectations. Her commitment to UDL, perseverance with the coursework, and application of the content was exceptional.
Kim’s example has improved my leadership skills and teaching ability. She asked thoughtful questions and showed me that answers can evolve and come in many forms. She collaborated with her colleagues and myself with honesty and integrity which authentically drove discussions toward critical reflection and self-evaluation. She confronts challenges head-on with both vulnerability and courage. Kim presented many of her UDL lessons and units to the class, many of which inspired my own work in my classroom and in future professional development sessions. She presented on numerous ways to meaningfully incorporate technology into the art classroom, developed a series of lessons for sixth graders on SMASH books (a novel way of combining art and literacy) and presented her inventive use of Class Dojo at the Massachusetts Art Education Association’s Conference. No matter what the challenge, lesson, or presentation, Kim approaches her work with a creative problem-solving attitude coupled with an exceptional ability to collaborate with colleagues and reach students and artists of all ages. I am grateful for her influence in my work.
Your institution would be extremely fortunate to have Kim Marshall as a member of your faculty. Her passion for education is contagious and her content knowledge is exceptional. Kim is an example of an educator who embodies growth mindset coupled with grit and the creative mind of an artist. I am happy to speak by phone or communicate over email if you have further questions.

Sincerely,

Liz Byron
Gardner Pilot Academy
Boston Public Schools
ebyron@bostonpublicschools.org
(570) 706-5193

"Ms. Marshall, you make my day better by complimenting my work. You helped me look past 2D art, and explore the world 3D art. I was not looking forward to this art cycle at all, but you changed my mind. I am so grateful for you!"

Overall, my favorite part of this Art Cycle was chatting with friends while building a dollhouse out of pieces of cardboard. It gave me a chance to connect with people I normally don’t interact with on a daily basis. Ms. Marshall, I want to thank you for giving us the chance to sit wherever we wanted to as long as we stayed on task and opening up the opportunity for us to pursue our dreams in art.

Teaching Philosophy

Kim Marshall

My teaching philosophy is deeply rooted in fostering creativity, cultural enrichment, and lifelong learning through engaging artistic endeavors. My approach is characterized by a profound commitment to empowering individuals to express themselves, igniting their inspiration, and creating truly inclusive learning environments.

Core Principles of My Teaching:

Empowering Student Voice and Expression: I am dedicated to empowering individuals of all ages to express themselves through artistic endeavors. This means my pedagogy values student voice, choice, and personal expression throughout the entire creative process. I believe that when students feel empowered to create authentically, their learning becomes more meaningful and impactful.

Inquiry-Based Learning through Studio Habits of Mind: A cornerstone of my teaching is the integration of the Studio Habits of Mind. I use this framework to guide students in:

Developing Craft: I encourage students to learn and refine artistic techniques and skills, providing them with the tools they need to bring their ideas to life.

Engaging & Persisting: I foster resilience and sustained effort, helping students navigate challenges and see their artistic projects through to completion.

Envisioning: I guide students in generating and developing their own unique ideas for their art.

Expressing: I help students convey meaning and emotion through their work, understanding art as a powerful form of communication.

Observing: I cultivate keen observational skills, teaching students to look closely at the world around them to inform their artistic creations.

Reflecting: I promote critical self-assessment and encourage students to learn from their artistic process, celebrating successes and understanding areas for growth.

Stretching & Exploring: I encourage experimentation and support students in pushing their creative boundaries.

Understanding Art Worlds: I connect student work to broader artistic contexts and communities, showing them how art fits into the world.

Inclusive Education through Universal Design for Learning (UDL): My pedagogy is deeply informed by Universal Design for Learning (UDL). This commitment ensures that my art lessons are accessible and meaningful for students with diverse backgrounds and abilities. I strive to achieve this by:

Providing Multiple Means of Representation: I present information and content in varied ways to cater to diverse learning styles and needs.

Offering Multiple Means of Action & Expression: I provide learners with alternative ways to demonstrate what they know, allowing for varied forms of artistic output and problem-solving.

Ensuring Multiple Means of Engagement: I tap into learners' interests, offer appropriate challenges, and increase motivation to learn, ensuring all students feel connected and motivated in my art classroom.

Cultivating Curiosity and Engagement: As a passionate and energetic educator, my goal is to create a dynamic learning environment where students' eyes light up with curiosity and engagement. I believe in an active, hands-on approach that sparks intrinsic motivation and makes learning a joyful experience.

Making Interdisciplinary Connections: My background, including experience as a Technology Teacher and involvement in projects like "Packing Peanuts Palooza" (investigating biodegradable materials for art) and "Sound Scapes" (listening, journaling, recording), informs my interdisciplinary approach. I love connecting art with science, technology, and other subjects to create a richer learning experience.

Fostering Community and Cultural Enrichment: As a community leader with a commitment to cultural enrichment, I integrate diverse cultural perspectives and community-based projects into my art curriculum. This broadens students' understanding of art's vital role in society and helps them connect with the world around them.

In summary, my teaching pedagogy is a dynamic blend of student-centered art education, grounded in the practical application of the Studio Habits of Mind and the inclusive principles of Universal Design for Learning. I deliver this with an energetic and engaging approach, always striving to foster creativity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love for learning in every student.
