Covid 19 Vaccine Mandate in Hospitals: opinion

This weeks assignment is to give my opinion on whether or not the covid vaccine should be mandated in hospitals. I think if there were a right or wrong decision or solid evidence on this issue, we would not be having this discussion. I have reviewed conflicting articles and research that can make both yes and no, plausible and valid answers for this question. I am conflicted as to whether or not it should be mandated because of the growing body of research suggesting it could be harmful, yet effective for some. Evidence shows it can cause sudden myocarditis that "usually" clears up on its own. Yet I still have a very high resting heart rate and chest pain from time to time since I received my vaccine. I had my second shot in April of 2022 and now, in September, I still have not had a menstrual cycle after twenty years of cycles that were very predictable and never late/early. Yet when I read scholarly articles or research the topic, I am told that I am probably stressed out due to the pandemic. That alone makes me angry because instead of saying "we don't know", they are giving ridiculous advice to eat better and eliminate stressors, basically blaming the person instead of the treatment. I am not stressed and at other times in my life I had more stressors than I do now, yet I didn't have my period disappear. Also, I never had covid before I was vaccinated and was continuously exposed. Since I had the vaccine just five months ago, I have had covid three times. The first time was five days after receiving the vaccine. I had not been around anyone except the pharmacist at Walgreens and I was careful to wear a mask. My daughter also got it after I received the second shot and was hospitalized with a very high fever. I am wondering why I get covid so much now when before I was exposed frequently and did not get it. I am also wondering about the chest pains and heart rate since the second shot. I have never had any health problems; I eat healthy and take care of myself, but it seems like my health is starting to go downhill. The same applies to my coworkers who are constantly sick and seem to be having more and more chronic health issues. I used to think that because I was exposed to so much at work, I never got sick and was immune to everything. The last several months my immune system is hardly keeping up. I'm not saying all of these things are definitely linked to the vaccine, but I do believe my immune system has been affected by my response to vaccination and now overreaction to everything I encounter. Research on this topic is limited in terms of access so I cannot say for sure but I think there is correlation between having an overreactive immune response and having the vaccine, that's my personal opinion. Is it worth getting the vaccine to save you from having serious complications? Possibly, but we don't know the long term effects on our health just yet.

I had little to no symptoms compared to people who are not vaccinated when I had covid. This made it easy to recover all of the times I had covid, but it does not prevent infection. Having covid seems to stop reinfection for a month or so.

To be honest I truly don't know. I can't base my opinion on my personal experience just yet because there are other factors about the vaccine that need to be researched. Whether I created an immune response from the vaccine or infection, I was going to get covid eventually and probably would have similar side effects after infection as I had with the vaccine. So it is really hard to say without more data. It does seem like those who are vaccinated have less complications than those who do not get the vaccine, that I know for sure. I am leaning towards yes on the mandate.

Covid Vaccine Opinion

I personally have very strong beliefs about the Covid vaccine. I know not everyone’s beliefs are the same as mine, and that is completely okay with me. I respect everyone’s beliefs and I hope they do the same with me. I actually had to write a religious exemption for my work to be able to keep working where I am. My religion is more of a healing touch, prayer, and holistic natural approach instead of vaccines and medications. And under the Title Vll of the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 it prohibits employment discrimination based on sex, race, color, national origin, and religion. I do not feel forcing people to receive anything is the right thing to do. Let them be able to make their own decisions and decide what they want. My religious beliefs played a big factor in myself deciding I did not want to receive the vaccine. As said in Corinthians 6:19 our bodies are temples of the holy spirit and God says we are to take care of our temples. Also, in Corinthians 5:10 we are to appear before judgement of Christ for the things we have done while in our bodies good or bad. Lastly, in 2 Corinthians 7:1 we have promises to let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates our bodies and spirits to perfect holiness. We are not to introduce any kind of objects or substances to our temples that could harm them. These injections go against our bodies natural abilities of the healing process. I believe God gave our bodies the strength and abilities to fight off the Covid-19. These vaccines are also not preventing the vaccine they are just trying to prevent he spread of the vaccine. I fully rely on God and the power of God to protect my body and soul from the disease and to heal me if I were to contact the disease.

I personally have lost 10 people within our community within about 6 months, some were close to me, some were even family, and others were not. Every single one of those people had received the Covid vaccines. There is one major person who recently passed that still bothers me to this day. I will not mention her name, but she was a healthy and happy woman. She had actually just went to the doctors not but 1 month before her death to complete her yearly checks. She had no heart issues, lung issues, no major issues at all. She went on a girls trip with one of our neighbors and they had stopped in Kentucky to see her daughter on their way to the beach. She had came down seen everyone in the morning, said she had to walk upstairs to get her purse before they were about to go out for the day. She did not come back down for 15 minutes. So, our neighbor walked up stairs to check on her and found her dead. Here they found out she had a blood clots in her heart and they believed one went to her brain and killed her. All of the other 9 people in our community did not have any major issues either and I know of 5 that died with clots in their heart, brain and lungs.

I personally already have a major heart problem that I was born with and other possible neurological issues that I am currently trying to figure out. I do not need a vaccine to increase the chance of me having clots in my heart or brain or lungs. I am already at bad odds due to my heart problem I do not want to risk taking a vaccine that could ultimately contribute to my death or let alone cause my death. I want to be able to live my life happy and as best as I can. That is why I believe in the more holistic natural approach and healing touch versus medications and vaccines.

Covid 19 Vaccine Mandate in Hospital settings: Opinion (Crystal Martinez-Jacome)

Should the Covid vaccine be mandated in hospital/ healthcare settings? Well, I do not think this question has a clear cut and dry answer. I lean on the side of allowing us to make our own decisions when it comes to receiving the vaccine. I do not believe that anyone should be forced to get any kind of treatment for anything they do not wish to receive. That being said, I do not believe that people are being forced to get the vaccine, everyone absolutely has a choice to say yes or no, will their decision have consequence? Probably. Just as we as “free” people have the right to say yes or no to receiving the vaccine, our healthcare facilities have the right to hire whom they wish and can make policies as they wish. Just as we are able to say no to the vaccine the hospitals can (and will) decline to employ us, and that is their right because they have policies and are allowed to enforce them as they wish. If you do not wish to receive the vaccine you have that right and you will be able to find employment at a place that does not require vaccinations, will that be in a place that you want? Maybe not, but if you choose to not get the vaccine and the policy of the place requires it then you must comply for employment. Now, I am not saying this to say I agree with this, as I stated above, I do believe we should be able to choose if we receive the vaccine or not, but I also agree that healthcare facilities have the right to set policies and can decide to employ who they wish as long as they aren’t discriminating based on sex, religion, race, or sexual orientation. Facilities also have exemptions available to those who have valid exemptions based on health, religion, etc.… so there are ways to work in these facilities without receiving the vaccine if you so wish to. Health care facilities put these policies in place to “protect” their employees and the public, whether these “protections” are valid or not, that is their right to put these policies in place. I am unsure why this vaccine mandate in healthcare facilities is such a huge deal to people, because in my opinion it isn’t violating any human rights, people have the choice to get vaccinated, get a valid exemption, or find a job elsewhere, this seems very simple to understand, and though some people do not like it, and do not wish to comply, it isn’t unlawful for the facility to impose. If you do not wish to get the vaccine, find another job. In fact, I believe that the only places that are allowed to require vaccination are those who are receiving funding from Medicare and Medicaid, while this includes most hospitals and nursing homes, there are some healthcare facilities that do not, so there are jobs out there, they may just be harder to find. So, my answer to the question isn’t very clear, I know, but in my opinion it really is 2 separate questions; Should vaccination be mandated? To that I say absolutely not, we should have the choice whether to receive it or not. Should hospitals mandate vaccination? My opinion on this doesn’t really matter because they absolutely have the right to set policies as long as they aren’t discriminating based on race, sex, orientation, or religion. After-all the hospitals/healthcare facilities require many vaccines for employment and I don’t see anyone in an uproar for receiving their MMR, Polio, DTaP, ect…

I do believe the COVID 19 vaccine should be required for direct care workers in a hospital setting, aside from medical exemptions. That being said, I obviously don't think anyone should be held down and given the COVID vaccine, but if you don't want it, work elsewhere. That might sound mean, but it is what it is. The risks associated with receiving the COVID 19 vaccine are astronomically less than some of the symptoms that result from COVID or long COVID. Moreover, we are the people who are caring for the sick and imunocompromised, so should we not give them their best chance not to get sick? One might say, "if they want to be protected, they should get vaccinated." And while I hear that, I have a response. As a sophomore in high school, my little brother was on quarantine for mumps. Although he had received his vaccinations, and his titers they ran for MMR did come back still positive for having immunity he got it anyway. This is because of a lack of herd immunity in our community. Herd immunity-more or less- is when so much of the population is vaccinated that it doesn't matter that not all vaccines are 100% effective or that not all people can actually get vaccinated, because the herd is immune enough for them to not get sick anyway. Obviously my little brother is fine now, but with a disease that is more serious, he may not have been. I think it is our responsibility not only as healthcare professionals, but as people, to get vaccinated to protect those around us.

Do you think hospitals should make the COVID vaccine mandatory for direct care workers?
In my belief I think they should be mandated to have the vaccine. It is no different than any of the other vaccines that are required.( Tdap,MMR,IPV,HepB,MCV4, Varicella) The vaccine is effective in preventing severe disease, hospitalization and death, and there is some evidence that being vaccinated will make it less likely to become infected and pass the virus on to others.
Employees that I work with feel they have a right to get the vaccine or not. I guess I feel that yes right, but you are required to get the flu vaccine and all others , why fight this one? Employers state that the testing alternative is a financial and administrative burden, which I agree with . I don't see the point of testing when yes you can come to work with a virus and pass it on and there is no testing. But covid is dangerous to those with compromised immune systems and it can be deadly. As a healthcare worker one should consider this a risk . “ Policies that constrain or eliminate individual choice can be controversial and raise a number of ethical considerations, and so they should be
justified by advancing another valuable social goal, like protecting public health”(.May 2022 WHO)
As a healthcare worker, you are in direct contact with patients who have hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes ,of which were the most common comorbidity in patients' death due to COVID-19. More than half of the patients had two or more comorbidities. It would be a disservice to us as nurses or doctors to purposely put a patient at risk to avoid a vaccine.
Like Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, many other vaccines use a piece of, or weakened version of, the germ that the vaccine protects against. This is how the measles and flu vaccines work. When a weakened or small part of the virus is introduced to your body, you make antibodies to help protect against future infection.

Hospitals to date in Northeast Ohio have not been able to mandate the vaccine. A Lot of the issue is concerns about losing workers who may not comply amid already existing staffing shortages. It just may be that everything about the vaccine seemed “rushed” and due to fear it was a vaccine we were told to get. It was a skeptical thing for a lot of healthcare workers for that reason alone. Many figured they would get covid and be ok.

Benefits outweigh the known and potential risks of the vaccine. Thrombosis, myocarditis, pericarditis and Guillain- Barre syndrome are known risks but are low. The scare to many are these. Which can be scary , however , the damage caused by COVID-19 can be long lasting and even fatal.

Should the covid vaccine be mandated for healthcare workers? During the beginning of the epidemic, we were told the vaccine was essential for preventing and spreading infection in the hospital setting. The covid 19 vaccine was created in record time while also making a new type using mRNA to provide immunity for individuals with concerns of adverse reactions. Even though the intention is good to stop the means for transmission, there are pitfalls, and people feel that their right to refuse to receive a vaccine is compromised. The vaccine should not be mandated to healthcare workers or anyone that does not want to receive it. Right now, the effective rate is 95% for the original variant, but the vaccine's effectiveness depends on whether we have enough vaccine variants that will be effective. What about acquired immunity to Covid? Why isn't that being considered when being asked if you had immunity? Most specialists believe that the so-called herd immunity gained from global vaccination is the solution to the current challenges (Neumann-Böhme et al. 978).

I worked as a nurse in 2020 during the pandemic's beginning.

In my opinion, vaccines should be mandatory for those in the medical field working directly with patients, with the exception of religious beliefs and certain medical conditions. Can we force someone to get the vaccine? Obviously not, and I agree with the fact that people should be free to choose if they want vaccinated. That being said we shouldn't put our patients at an increase risk for catching COVID just because we don't want a vaccine. On the other hand I do agree with the fact that people with certain medical conditions should be exempt. Those who are immunocompromised or with certain conditions. It is unknown how the vaccine could affect them or could actually do more harm than good. The whole debate on should the COVID vaccine be mandated is a difficult one, as the vaccine is still fairly new and created fairly quick, but I feel over the past couple years they have been effective for the most part, and that the COVID vaccine should be mandatory for those working directly in patient care.

Covid 19 Vaccine opinion- By: Demi Johnson

My opinion has changed drastically since the start of the covid 19 pandemic on the covid vaccine. Currently I struggle to choose a choice on whether or not a vaccine mandate is warranted. Deciding to put a mandate in place is not as cut and dry as it may seem because there is a lot of grey area on the topic. My first initial thought is well, the hospitals (and even nursing schools) mandate vaccines already and even require titers to show your immunity. So how is the covid vaccine any different? Expectations for medical or religion reasons have been used for the flu vaccine and others so why cant the same be used for the covid vaccine. So as long as the mandate isnt discriminating and exceptions are allowed a mandate could be enforced because it helps to protect the "greater good." I was a covid nurse at the start of the pandemic. I reused PPE, fought a disease we didnt know much about and on way to many cases help an Ipad up so a patient could say good by family. These times as a nurse were some of the worse experiences I had ever had in my life. I struggled emotionally with the critical patients not having family on their last days and pulling into work and seeing the refrigerator outside of morgue overflow crushed me every time. I remember starting my shifts and watching my patients go from 2 L NC to airvo before it was even lunch and then not having an ICU or PCU bed available at that time to send them to for closer monitoring. During these movements I would have done anything to help save as many lives as I could and would have gotten any kind of vaccine to protect the community. I was so ecstatic when the vaccines rolled out and was agreeable to the mandate at that time. I thought it was for the greater good and that herd immunity was right around the corner. But after the vaccines came out, so did the complications associated with them. In the beginning, it was just flu like systems then it progressed to worse side effects like DVT or PE. This made me more hesitant to mandate the vaccine because it seemed to have some bad side effects. This risk associated started to make me lean against a mandate and allowing each individual to understand the risk and make their own educated decision on it. A couple of months after the vaccine came out I expected to see little to no covid patients and more of a crowd immunity. But instead, during the second winter of covid the numbers at my hospital where at an all time high. When looking at my patients' vaccinations I noticed most of my patients did have both covid vaccines and still contracted the virus and needed hospitalization. I started to notice that the vaccine did not cause heard immunity. Then after being vaccinated my self, both my husband and I contracted covid. After my experiences in the hospital and seeing how many patients get covid despite the vaccination status, I now lean more against the mandate. Due to many factors such as side effects of the vaccine, vaccine effectiveness and the right to autonomy. All in all, I feel that there is still plenty of more research to be done on COVID -19 and the vaccine before a mandate should be put in place.

Hello. I feel that there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to this question. I feel that everyone has a right to their own opinion when it comes to the COVID-19 vaccine. I tend to lean on the side that allows hospitals to allow their employees to make their own decisions when it comes to the vaccine requirement. My hospital allowed its employees to opt out by signing a religious exemption form. I feel that the form should not be necessary.. If a employee wants the vaccine great. Allow them to get the vaccine. If a employee has their own opinions and beliefs about the vaccine and they do not want the vaccine, great. Allow them to follow their own beliefs and opinions and not obtain the vaccine without having to sign a form. I understand the high demand for healthcare employees to get the vaccine as they are exposed to COVID mostly every time they are at work. However, people are exposed everyday at other jobs and in the public. Therefore, everyone should have a choice about the vaccine. I feel that if you want the vaccine great, if not then great. I personally do not have the vaccine for multiple reasons that I will not get into here but I have my own beliefs, opinions, and health issues that kept me from obtaining the vaccine. I have worked about COVID since the second wave hit in March 2021 and just recently got COVID for the first time in July of 2022. Many family members of mine and my boyfriends have gotten the vaccine and got COVID as well. I feel that everyone is entitled to make their own decisions and everyone should respect that.

When it comes to the topic of hospitals mandating the COVID vaccine, I have mixed feelings. Personally, I received my vaccine and boosters. I think that as humans we should have the right to decide our own health decisions. Do I think everyone should receive the vaccine because there is data that it can lessen the affects of the disease? Yes, but I am only one person and do not make others choices. I feel that this vaccine should be like any other required vaccine that has always been here (flu, Tdap, MMR). I think now a days there is more media and influence than earlier years. People are more swayed to do something. I think leaning on the factual evidence is important. As we have seen, immunocompromised person are at severe risk for COVID. I feel they should get the vaccine and need protected. At the end of the day, forcing people to do something will cause an uprise. People like to feel they have control and can make their own choices. Overall, I do not think the vaccine should be mandated but I think people should think hard about their choices and who and how it really effects.

Should COVID-19 Vaccines be Mandated in Hospitals? I am going to have a different opinion about Should the COVID-19 Vaccine be Mandated in Hospitals? I am going to have a different opinion to this question than most people will. I do not feel that the COVID-19 Vaccine should be mandated in hospitals. I realize that being in the healthcare profession, we are going to be exposed to many different diseases. I also realize that we need to practice utilitarianism. I feel that I have already consented to every other vaccine that the hospital wants me to have, but this vaccine was created so fast that we really don't know what the side effects could be. I am not saying that the vaccine does not do any good at all, but I feel that it should be personal choice. When I received my second dose, I developed a rash. I also still got COVID. I do think that a lot of people have reduced symptoms from the vaccine, but it is not the cure all that many promoted it to be. To me, it is going to stay around and have yearly boosters similar to the flu vaccine. My brother in law died in the hospital because he was given a drug that he was allergic to. The hospital tried to say that he died due to COVID. My sister in law had to dispute the cause of death. I totally believe that COVID is real, but, at the same time, I feel that it has been exaggerated. Even with masking and vaccines, it still exists. I realize that people do not wear their masks correctly or they only wear cloth masks, but, everyone was pressured to get the vaccine because it was "going to stop the spread of COVID" and we are still experiencing COVID.

The covid 19 vaccine mandate for healthcare workers is a difficult one to navigate. One one hand, if we consider the flu vaccine, which has been mandated by many large healthcare systems for quite some time, it makes sense that the covid vaccine would be required as well in the midst of a pandemic. I think the biggest draw back for most people is the quick production of the vaccine and the lack of historical observation. While the vaccine was created in a way that no other vaccine has been produced in our life time when I comes to speed, research, and the shear amount of people all working to produce it at once, I believe that makes it safer than we give it credit for. The since that went into the producing the covid 19 vaccine was not "rushed" as many believe, rather it was one problem that people around the world all worked together on at the same time. I personally think that the vaccine is safe for most health persons and and important source of protection for those who are predisposed to infection. On the topic of making it mandatory however, I feel that offering incentive, and strongly encouraging is a better alterative. We live in a country where people are supposed to free to believe what they want and do what they want with their own body. And the nursing in general is a huge supporter of Autonomy and self directed care for their patients. So it does not make sense to me that a nurse should have to forgo her own belief system and give away her autonomy to serve a medical corporation. It makes me feel like nurses and other healthcare workers are expected to get the vaccine and other vaccines like the flu despite any personal grievances because that is "what we signed up for." And that is not conducive to a good work environment of employee morale.

In the healthcare industry, the patient's right to consent or refuse medical treatments and procedures is honored, it would be hippocritical for that same industry to mandate a vaccines upon their employees. As healthcare workers, our decision whether or not to receive vaccines should be respected because we are professionals in this field, and for the most part, understand the pros and cons. There are many reasons a person may choose not to receive a vaccination, may it be for medical reasons, religious or personal beliefs or otherwise, it should still be our right to choose. Long term effects from the covid-19 vaccination have not yet been seen as it is a new vaccine. Most other vaccines have been trialed and studied extensively over decades, while the covid-19 vaccine was manufactured and released so quickly. Those who are hesitant about it because of the lack of data should not be forced. Part of informed consent is being able to obtain all available information and make a decision based on that information. In the code of ethics, nurses must also take care of themselves, and the decision whether or not to vaccinate is what the nurse feels is best for his or herself. I personally was unable to vaccinate due to a medical condition and my doctor even advised against the vaccine. The fact that my job and everything I worked so hard for was threatened because of this caused unnecessary stress. I felt that people are being put in that position is unethical, especially because there are "reasonable accomodations" available, ie PPE that protects both the nurse and the patient.

Like many others, the vaccine mandate for all employees is not a simple debate. There are so many swaying opinions on both sides of this topic. At this point, I believe that all hospitals should mandate the vaccine for all employees except for medical exemptions in time. I, however, used to disagree with this opinion when the vaccine was first introduced. The vaccines that are given on a routine basis, such as, in pediatrics have been around for a long time. These vaccines have been studied and tested for years to ensure their safety and side effects. The Covid vaccine has not had the opportunity to be studied very long, which made me initially lean toward the opposing side. However, looking at the spread of any virus, especially in pediatrics, those unvaccinated can spread the virus to those unable to receive it. Many people especially who are being hospitalized or immununocomprimsed are ineligible to receive the vaccine. Likewise, there is the argument that those vaccinated are still developing symptoms of the virus. However, the symptoms they are experiencing are less severe than those unvaccinated. I think to reach a common grounds about mandated the Covid Vaccine, there is work for improvement in the policy. We are constantly learning about this new virus. I think its important for it to be further researched before demanding so many people receive it. This being said, at some point in the future, the vaccine should be mandated to those in direct patient care.

Should COVID Vaccines be Mandatory?

I do not think the covid should be mandated. While I think the idea of the vaccine is great, the fact that the vaccine is so new gives me reason to feel as if an individual should have the right to choose whether or not they receive. Being a young female, the thing that makes me most nervous is the idea of it potentially impacting my reproductive organs. Without the proper research, there is potential for long term harmful effects of the vaccine. I also think this jeopardizes the principle of autonomy. While many individuals are making the decision to get the vaccine, it is simply because they cannot afford to lose their job, not because they are choosing to get it because they want to. Healthcare is built on the principle of autonomy and forcing health care workers to get a vaccine they do not want is going against it. It is difficult to enforce this principle when as nurses ourselves, we are unable to make our own decisions. I do think in the future there is potential to encourage the vaccine, like the flu vaccine, but without proper timely research, I find that it is unfair to force someone to make that decision when they are unaware of how that will impact their future health.

In my opinion, hospitals creating mandates for to receive the COVID vaccine is one of the worst things employers could do. I understand the push came from Medicare/Medicaid which a lot of hospital facilities rely on, however this placed an incredible amount of stress on healthcare providers during an already incredibly trying time. Those of us who were able to maintain our jobs during the height of COVID may be considered "lucky" compared to those who suffered losses financially during this time. This didn't come without consequences however, I personally witnessed several former coworkers leave their position, most of which completely left healthcare altogether and made comments that "it wasn't worth it anymore". I found an article written by the CDC that stated "According to a survey from June-September 2020 [2]:

93% of health workers reported being stressed out and stretched too thin;

82% shared being emotionally and physically exhausted; and

45% of nurses reported that they were not getting enough emotional support".

Other studies during the pandemic found:

22% of healthcare workers experienced moderate depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder in a collective analysis of 65 studies [3].

69% of physicians reported experiencing depression and 13% had thoughts of suicide [1].

Of physicians reporting burnout, 64% were women [1].

Nurses, frontline, and younger workers reported more severe psychological symptoms than other health workers [4]. (Center for Disease Control, 2022)

Should the COVID vaccine be Mandatory? By: Ashley Morgan

I do not feel Covid vaccines should be mandatory for hospital workers. The vaccine is not researched enough in my opinion to force this on people with unknown side effects, whether immediate or in years to come. I feel vaccination is a personal choice. I myself had the first set of two vaccines so I am not against it, however, I have not received the booster as of now due to increased amount of side effects surfacing, as well as the current strains of Covid being less severe. I do not like the idea of people being released from their positions due to the refusal of the vaccine. I understand protecting the patients. I like the idea of other protocols being placed on those who are unvaccinated, such as proper PPE and working with patients at a lower acuity level that have less risks should they get Covid. I also would support the idea of giving the employees who do get vaccinated some extra perks. This would provide an incentive to get the vaccine, while not forcing it. I feel that putting a poorly researched substance in one's body should be their own choice.
