The Battle of The Atlantic occurred in the Atlantic Ocean and lasted approximately six years. It began September 3, 1939, and ended May 8, 1945. The purpose of this battle was to gain control of the Atlantic Ocean. The Germans wanted to cut off the flow of the supplies and men that were being transported between Europe and North America. One of the causes that lead Canada to win the war was the continuous advance in war technology. Both the allied countries and Germany were continuously developing new pieces of technology that would allow them to have an advantage to win the war. Some of the technology used by the allied countries include radar and and sonar (ASDIC) technology, a noise making device, and more. The ASDIC technology assisted the allies to find new weapons, like the "Hedgehog" bombs, which sunk submarines effectively. The Germans had developed torpedoes that were attracted to the sound of the ships' propellers. This technological advance by the Germans resulted in the allies to create a noise making device that was towed behind their ships, so the boats weren't damaged.

Although Canada won the battle, there were great casualties along the way. There were approximately 70,000 allied soldiers that lost their lives, 4,400 of that were from Canada and Newfoundland. Along with the soldiers, there were many civilians that lost their lives; some 136 from the ferry SS Caribou. Since this battle took place at sea, the majority of the bodies were not recovered. To remember the sailors, their names were put on a plaque at the Sailors' Memorial in Point Pleasant Park in Halifax. Something that is very historically significant that came out of this was the growth of Canada's Navy. It started as a small country with a very small navy. With only some ships and a few thousand navy-men, it expanded to 400 ships, 90,000 sailors, and 6,000 women from the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service. Canada had the fourth largest navy in the world, by the end of the war.

Prior to the war, how was this soldier's life similar or different to your own?

Prior to the war, this soldier’s life was very different to mine. When he was fifteen, Leonard attended the Halifax Naval College, and was unemployed. On the other hand, I have a job, and attend high school, instead of post secondary school. His family’s property is on the water, which is where he grew up. This resulted in him having a love for boats and being on the water. I live in the countryside, and I don’t have a passion for the water, or boats. My passions are academics, and I love going on walks in the forest. It is stated that he is the second oldest out of four children, whereas I am the oldest out of three children. He was appointed as midshipman on a Royal Navy vessel, which was one of the first of a series of ships that he served on in WW1. I was not appointed as a midshipman, and I don’t plan on being appointed as one. On the topic of this, his upbringing around the war is very different to mine, as I don’t have any upbringing around the war whatsoever. His experiences and successes are very different from mine. However, we are both very smart and determined people, which is the only similarity I could find between us. For these reasons given, this is why Leonard W. Murray’s life is very different from my life, prior to the war.

Should the memory of this battle be one of celebration or sombre of remembrance? Explain your answer.

The memory of this battle should be of celebration. A few reasons to support this are the technological advancements that took place during this war, the outcome of the war for the allied countries, how the soldiers were commemorated, and the growth of Canada’s navy during this time. The battling countries were at each other's throats, trying to defeat one another. Scientists from each side would come up with technology that would be better than that of their opponent, and that would allow them to get closer to winning the battle. Although there was an immense amount of casualties that took place during the war, and a lot of the sailor’s bodies were not recovered, their names were put on a plaque in Halifax, to remember and acknowledge their hard work and dedication to Canada. The growth of Canada’s navy during this time is very notable. To expand, Canada entered the Battle of the Atlantic with only a few thousand men and not a lot of boats. By the end of the war, Canada had the fourth largest navy in the world, with approximately 400 ships and 90,000 sailors. Women were also brought into the navy, which shows great improvement in Canada’s inclusivity. For these reasons provided, this is why the memory of this battle should be one of celebration.
