China wants you! To lend them a hand by becoming a scholar official in the civil service. A scholar is an educated member of the government. Before anyone becomes a scholar they had to take a test. The tests were so difficult students had to prepare and study for about a year. However, only a small fraction of people who ever took the test would reach the top level and be appointed a position. Some students even cheated during this test by writing on their clothes or paying someone else to take the test for them. Scholars were the elite members of society because they preformed many important jobs in the government and were widely admired For their knowledge and ethics. Their typical responsibilities were running government offices, maintaining roads , irrigation systems, and other public works; updating and maintaining official records; or collecting taxes. The benefits of being a scholar were considerable respect and reduced penalties for breaking the law. Many also became wealthy from gifts given by people seeking their aid.
