I like how the teacher gets to ask the students "why" in the fact interview. I also like that the students are not being timed.

I learned not to write the answer on the back of the flashcard. Students tend to memorize the answer before learning the strategy to use to memorize the answer.

Don't focus on memorization rather on thinking how to solve a problem, more conceptual than procedural

This will tie in nicely with our data folders. We can add this into our fact fluency math centers as well.

I still think memorization is important, but knowing the howwhy behind it is key!

Fluency does not necessarily mean having math facts 100% memorized.

This is a great tool to use to see what strategies the students are using during math. The student are being held accountable to explain their thinking. They are not let off the hook!

Individually assess math fluency and individualize flash cards. Do not put answers on them so students can use multiple strategies to solve.

I liked how she suggested to only use a small amount of flash cards that emphasized what they missed on the assessment instead of a huge stack of flash cards.

Excellent tool to understand student mastery and/or need for extra help. Explaining their own methods continues to build confidence and overall success. I liked the peer review strategy so they could recognize potential areas of individual improvement!! Great Session :)

Great strategy to detect how well students know their basic computation skills. I am very interested on what strategies our students use beside counting with their fingers ( which I see a lot with my upper grades students)

I learned that it isn't necessary to write the answers on the back of flashcards. Also, I had never heard the word cadence used in this context before.
