When it comes to the school itself and the community, respect is incredibly important. In schools i think that establishing a baseline of respect is crucial to a students behavioral needs. This also applies to the community in general. Allowing students the opportunity to understand, ask questions, relate and much more, allows for the respect to be gained, which in turn can benefit behavior and emotional disputes that the student may be dealing with.

Laying out expectations for students who have behavioral and emotional disorders or struggles can be incredibly beneficial. It allows students the chance right away to understand what is expected of them in the classroom. By laying out expectations, it allows me to prepare my students for their experience in the classroom on any given day. By laying out expectations, we are allowing them to formulate any questions that they may have, while preparing themselves mentally for what is expected from them. This can also allow for a better respectful relationship between teachers and students which can also be beneficial to the process.

Why PBIS?

PBIS is a great program because it really focuses on the promoting of good behavior in schools. What I like the most about this technique is that, rather than punishing students, this program really uses a different approach in showing students why what they are doing is wrong. Instead of punishing students for bad behavior, or incorrect behavior, it teaches them how to better cope with impulses and how to choose better approaches and behaviors for different situations.

Helping students become independent learners

This technique is important especially for students who may have an EBD. This can include teaching students self regulation, self instruction, goal setting, and even just self monitoring to maintain a healthy balance and keep themselves on track. Students will become more aware of their behaviors, abilities, underlying skills and even self confidence. While this is great, this also benefits teachers and other students by allowing teachers more time to work with others who may be struggling as well as other things that need addressing.

This is just one of the techniques that i found interesting in keeping both students and families involved in behavior within the classroom. This allows teachers to give updates, show improvements and things to work on and so forth, with parents while also showing students where they are at and what they could do better. This could also work as a reinforcer to want the children to do better in order to show a good report.

Classroom management is really key in the PBIS. Classroom management can be incredibly beneficial in many different ways. Classroom management can include incentives, gradebooks, classroom expectations, class rules, notes home, positive reinforcement, discipline, firm respectful handshakes when children walk in in the morning, sign language, and many other ways to just connect with and establish respect.

As we watch in the video provided of 6 year old Beth, we learn just how much such a young child can actually be going through. This video provides ample evidence in proving that children have the ability to have some underlying reasons as to why they are acting emotionally and behavioral wise in what may be a bad way. PBIS, allows us to approach children and really learn more about them. It allows us to understand them better, and find a more individualized approach to helping them through a difficult time. This is also beneficial because it can lead to less stress and distraction in the classroom. It can help to maintain classroom stability, and help to maintain a somewhat better behavior from students as they gradually work through their struggles.
