My topic is Students with learning disabilities. I chose this topic because throughout my years of teaching, every year there seems to be a new learning disability a student possess. Every learning disability entails specific accommodations to support the students academically. I have not always felt prepared or qualified to accommodate these students, which I know is not fair to the students. After researching the different laws that protect students with learning disabilities, it has become very clear how important it is to support these students.

Students with learning disabilities is an important topic in education. As a school counselor, it is a responsibility to advocate for the students academically to help them be successful. As a teacher it is important to be able to both support these students in the classroom, and to be able identify the characteristics of students who may have a learning disability so they can receive the additional support they need to be successful.
When students are identified with a learning disability, it can become a legal manner when it comes to the students receiving the appropriate accommodations. There are multiple laws that protect individuals with learning disabilities. These laws ensure the students are receiving an equal opportunity. It can become an issue if educators are not trained correctly on how to provide students with the accommodations they need to succeed.
