Our theater usually only has 3 moving lights, however for this production we rented an additional 12, which was quite a cool experience, as well as a sneak peak as to what I'll expect in the future when I have more instruments available for designing. I was only an Assistant Stage Manager, however I still found the job challenging. However, this show was nominated and chosen to go to the Illinois State Theatre Festival at Illinois State University, which was both rewarding and even more stressful. The challenge for this show was how much we had to program the cues on the fly, due to massive time crunches with the Fall play going on at the same time, which I was ASM for. I was a lights crew member, a stagehand, a fog machine operator, and a follow-spot operator, and there laid the challenge. Even though the show was meant for kids, it ended up being one of the most stress heavy shows I've worked at BHS. As you can see though, I made it through it, and it was quite the learning experience. After having all the lights hung and being set for opening night 2 days early, the Director and our TD decided to hang 5 silk drapes across the stage to make it look like a circus tent, where the play is set. It looked amazing, except for the fact that it blocked almost every single light that we hung completely. So, with the ME's and the Director's O.K, I re-plotted and redesigned the whole show in 24 hours. I took insane amounts of extra hours after school, but I made it work, and the production had a fantastic opening night. Like I would find again, this show was all about the learning curve for me. Learning how to design and program on the fly is a big part of my job as a senior technician at BHS, and this show helped serve as a stepping stone to where I am now. The two pieces I designed turned out to be pretty basic, but served me well in the long run. We had a blast with this show, and we at BHS were all very big fans of the 4ft diameter mirror ball that we hung in front of our proscenium. I was the house left Follow-Spot Operator for this show, and it was not my first rodeo as a spot-op. This was however the first show I worked where we used projection as part of our set. Not only was putting them up an physical challenge, but learning how to set them up and use them to our advantage was good experience. Once as a spot-op, and once as a board op. Both times I've gotten to work closely with Greg Etter, who is a professional Lighting Designer for BYDE. Being able to shadow him for two shows has taught me a lot about design and plotting, as well as organization and efficiency. I had been on lights crew for a full school year, however I never saw myself as a crew head or a leader. As it turns out, I love being both: the boss, and the leader. I found a passion for inspiring others that I never knew existed, and I found a passion for being an ME that I never even dreamed of. This is also the show where I learned a lot about wiring little detailed that go on the set like sconces and lamps. I worked mostly as a stagehand with a few members of set crew, who taught me the basics of how their job works. A lot of what I know about set designing and carpentry has been from BYDE and my days as a Sophomore. It was more than just difficult to switch back and fourth between the two, it near impossible for me as a first year. Learning the black box board however has paid off majorly today, as I'm one of the only senior technicians who knows how it works. It was my first time ever touching something so confusing. Or at least it was confusing at the time. Cats was not only a phenomenal production, it was also the very first stepping stone that got me to stick with tech theatre. Everything about this musical made me fall in love with the job, from the star drop that went across the entire stage, to the detail work on the set that made it look like a trashy surface. When I was assigned to light my two dances I had no idea where to start. After I was able to set up a meeting with the choreographers, everything just sort of clicked. As they would explain the beat of the music and the color of the dancers' costumes, I could picture the lighting and the cues in my head. I wanted to go big for my last project in Metalworking, so I designed and forged a 5ft tall plant sculpture out of steel, and welded different shaped branches onto it with a MIG welder. I was the light board operator and a lighting designer for this show, and I could not be more proud of myself to go out with such a bang. I believe lighting this dance truly shows how much I've improved as a Lighting Designer and technician.
