The three periods:
1. The early Victorian period 1837-1851
  • Reform bill was passed, taking a large step towards the working class gaining more power(the reformation of the british election system)
  • The working class forming smaller groups and starting riots because they wanted the right to vote for all men over 21
2. The Mid-Victorian period 1851-1870
  • Succes and wealth
  • Better conditions
  • Leading induastrial country
3. The late Victorian period 1870-1901
  • Bischmark's germany and USA were a threat to britain
  • Economic depression
The british empire: By the near end of the 19 century, the british empire had grown bigger than ever. It became the biggest empire in history. Great Britain earned millions of pounds in profit from all their colonies all over the world. The actually owned places like Australia, most of India, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. The actual empire was therefore described as so big that the sun never sets there, but also as a place where blood never dries. Great Britain fought in a lot of wars, like against India and some dutch colonies.

-Rich children went to school at home until the age of ten and afterwards the rich boys would go to a public school while the girls would continue to be homeschooled.
- 1,25 million poor children went to sunday school.

-70 to 80 students in one class (poor inner city areas)
-The teaching was very strict and not very creative
-Discipline- punishment

-You could only use your right hand to write

- Little girls skirts would go to the knees.
 - At the age of 10 the lenght would be around mid-calf. 
-As they get older the skirts become longer and they end up with skirts to their ankles.

- The women had to go through a twelve-step process to get dressed.
- They wore tight corsets to get a thin waistline and exaggerated curves.
- The corset usually took two people to put it on.
- It was not uncommon for a woman to pass out because they couldn't breathe.

- Boys wore dresses until the age of three or four.
- Boys wore Scottish Highlanders trom the age of four to eight in the 1860's and at this time boys started wearing Knickerbocker suits. 

- The men designed the clothe which resulted in the unattainable look, they expected from the women.
- Men wore vests or waistcoats (they were just like tie's to them) which accentuated the rest of the mens clothing.
- Victorian hats were a necessity for men. The two most popular was the Top hat, the Derpy or Bowler hat.

A lot of the games used today are the same/look a lot like the games from the Victorian era.
A lot of the toys are/were made of wood. It wasn't normal for people to have many toys, even the rich kids didn't have many toys and/or games.
They had toys like jumping/skipping - - rope
- hoop and stick
- dolls
- and other toys made from wood
In a poor family, the parents would make toys. (could be a doll or a wooden soldier)

The conditions where much harder and worse.

Children would work 12-18 hours a day. Children as young as 3 years old would have a very dangerous work environment. 

Jobs:
Coal miner
Chimney sweep
Rat catcher
Laundry for pay
Matchmaking
Prostitution

Why children?
Cheaper, can fit in a chimney.
Girls where the cheapest.

The rich did not have jobs, they just had a boring childhood.
