It became the biggest empire in history. Great Britain earned millions of pounds in profit from all their colonies all over the world. The actually owned places like Australia, most of India, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. The actual empire was therefore described as so big that the sun never sets there, but also as a place where blood never dries.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Victorian schools<br>-In 1870 children aged 5 to 10 had to go to school. <br>-Rich children went to school at home until the age of ten and afterwards the rich boys would go to a public school while the girls would continue to be homeschooled.<br>- 1,25 million poor children went to sunday school. <br>-In 1870 children from alle the classes could go to school. <br>-70 to 80 students in one class (poor inner city areas)<br>-The teaching was very strict and not very creative<br>-Discipline- punishment<br>-Dunce-hat and "corner of shame"<br>-You could only use your right hand to write<br>- wrote on slates instead of paper<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the 1800 girls still wore corsets.<br>- Little girls skirts would go to the knees.<br> - At the age of 10 the lenght would be around mid-calf. <br>-As they get older the skirts become longer and they end up with skirts to their ankles.<br><br>- The women had to go through a twelve-step process to get dressed.<br>- They wore tight corsets to get a thin waistline and exaggerated curves.<br>- The corset usually took two people to put it on.<br>- It was not uncommon for a woman to pass out because they couldn't breathe.<br><br>- Boys wore dresses until the age of three or four.<br>- Boys wore Scottish Highlanders trom the age of four to eight in the 1860's and at this time boys started wearing Knickerbocker suits. <br><br>- The men designed the clothe which resulted in the unattainable look, they expected from the women.<br>- Men wore vests or waistcoats (they were just like tie's to them) which accentuated the rest of the mens clothing.<br>- Victorian hats were a necessity for men. The two most popular was the Top hat, the Derpy or Bowler hat.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong><em><sup>Victorian toys and games:</sup></em></strong><br>A lot of the games used today are the same/look a lot like the games from the Victorian era.<br>A lot of the toys are/were made of wood. It wasn't normal for people to have many toys, even the rich kids didn't have many toys and/or games.<br>They had toys like jumping/skipping - <em>- rope<br>- hoop and stick<br>- dolls<br>- and other toys made from wood</em><br>In a poor family, the parents would make toys. (could be a doll or a wooden soldier)<br>A rich family would buy toys, though they wouldn't have any more than maybe on or two toys/games.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Childhood in the Victorian Age was very different. The conditions where much harder and worse.<br><br>Children would work 12-18 hours a day. Children as young as 3 years old would have a very dangerous work environment. <br><br>Jobs:<br>Coal miner<br>Chimney sweep<br>Rat catcher<br>Laundry for pay<br>Matchmaking<br>Prostitution<br><br>Why children?<br>Cheaper, can fit in a chimney.<br>Girls where the cheapest.<br><br>The rich did not have jobs, they just had a boring childhood.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>
