Katie and I wanted to record a song that had lots of potential for instruments and tracks, whilst also not being too difficult. we decided on Nutshell by Alice in chains.

before recording the song I researched about some of the instruments used in the original song. the whole song consists of just electric guitar, electro acoustic guitar, drums and bass. there's a lot of vocal work too, but we skipped the vocals as we didn't need them.

the performance

overall this performance went perfectly and everyone was great. For me, the only thing I would have done differently is turn my amp up louder for the first two songs, and looked at the crowd more often.

the presentation

after a lot of planning, unfortunately our bandmate MJ couldn't make it to the presentation due to personal reasons. we had to improvise the roles of who would talk on certain subjects, but overall I think it went smoothly, and I tried to make sure there was a bit of life in the presentation so it wasn't too boring

we added 2 mic tracks, picking up guitar and bass, and afterwards, 2 midi tracks for drums and a highlighting keyboard. we had to adjust the timing on some parts, which we just chopped up and corrected. I'm happy with how this turned out and it taught me a lot about how to use this software that I am not used to.

we chose our 3rd song, "rooster" by Alice in chains. this song includes powerful vocals, multiple guitar riffs and heavy sounds, being excellent for our band. the practice went well and we are all getting a hand of this difficult song.

after recording / downloading all the sound effects I needed, I added them and corrected the timing.

once all the sound effects had been added, I automated the volumes on each one. I have linked an image for an example

the black hole noise

after looking for the right sound, I actually ended up using the official nasa released interpretation of what a black hole would sound like if you were able to hear it.

I edited the volume of this sound profusely, to give the effect that he was altering the state of the black hole as he messed with it

the final project turned out very well, and I'm happy with it. there weren't many problems and it definitely helped me learn some more advanced techniques with logic pro.

the performance

we performed last, and I think it went perfectly. Near to no mistakes were made, the volumes were correct and we nailed it.

we performed aint it fun by Paramore first which was the song I had a guitar solo in, I was very happy with it and I think the crowd enjoyed it too.

we then performed our original song which was great.

and finally we performed rooster by Alice in chains to wrap the day up.

over all the performance was a great experience and we learnt a lot, although one thing we will change for next time is the visual performance side of things, which means more movement and better outfits.

my solo performance

For my solo performance, I decided to play still got the blues by Gary Moore. This song has a lot of sentimental value to me as one of my biggest idols is Gary Moore. I think the performance went very well, although a couple mistakes, but I saved them and just kept going.

I got feedback from a couple classmates and it was all positive, and I was advised to work on not making faces when I hit a wrong note, which I will definitely work on

we have 100% decided on a song, which is "pretty fly for a white guy" by the offspring.

there is currently a lot of disagreement in the band, which is worth noting. we don't seem to be able to pick songs we all like. My personal solution is to just get on with it because we will get nowhere arguing.

I feel as though the sort of randomness of our band, and the sizer of it makes it very difficult to please everyone, but none the less, there is only 2 months till the gig and we must get on.

I didn't finish this assignment, I couldn't find any motivation for it. I've always struggled with these mixing tasks as I'm just not interested in it, but I understand that not everything in this course is going to be something I enjoy. I will work on my discipline for this course, as it doesn't make me feel good missing assignments, and its not a good luck either.

I kept pushing this project away, making it a last priority until it reached the deadline and it was too late. I am sorry for not completing this task, and I hope you can forgive this.
