He was born in New York city in 1843 to a well off family and grew up with unusual education as he traveled throughout Europe. During these travels he was introduced to the French author Balzac who became his biggest literary influence. As he later immigrated to England, much of his work focused on the lives of immigrants. He produced many novels and short stories in his life, the most notable being The Turn of the Screw, The Portrait of a Lady, The Bostonians, and the Ambassadors. He also was a part of the transatlantic movement and was a key figure during the transition from literary realism to literary modernism. Much of his work focuses on the psyche of the characters he creates and their internal problems, the key text being one of the most prominent examples of this. His style of unreliable narrators and stream of consciousness narration was very unique at the time.
