Participants stood on a line on the floor and using the list of questions which we devised, participants were asked to either step to the right if their answer was yes, to the left if the answer was no or stay on the line if the answer was maybe or they were unsure. We created a board game which puts a small spin on a classic in order to show players a representation of how Passports afford privilege and some the injustices within the current system. All players start on the square which says '0' and the first to reach '100' wins!

First, Each player takes a card face down from the Pile. This will act as their 'Passport' which dictates how easily they can move up the board. These are weighted to allow some more privilege than others but we'll get to that in a second. At the top of each card we also wrote the order of how players would start based again on the privilege they had so the 'better' passports got to go first. 

Each player must take turns to roll the dice, 1-6. The number they receive correlates to how many squares they can move forward. Certain Tiles which are colour coded mean they take a flight upward (Dark Blue), a boat back down (Light Blue) or must pass a security check (Yellow) in order to get fast tracked forward or wait where they are. In order to board however, they must roll Higher than the number associated with that colour on their Passport Card. If not, they must wait on whatever square they landed on and are not able to progress until their next turn.

This activity was interesting because there were questions in which all participants answered the same way and others in which there were mixed responses. 

All participants were passport holders and the majority considered their passport to be an important item to them. All participants also thought that passports from different countries afford their holders different levels of privilege.

Some areas in which we were surprised with the results were:

- That none of the participants said that their passport has any influence over the countries they chose to visit.

-  None of the participants felt that they has had to wait longer at passport control as a result of having a passport different to someone else.

- Half of the participants felt that passports are too expensive.

- 4 out of 6 participants think that passports will go digital in the future.

- Only 1 participant answered yes when asked if they liked the design of their passport.

We were surprised that none of our participants felt that their passport had any influence on the places they chose to travel to. Before the activity, we had assumed that at least someone in the group would have felt that their passport did influence the locations they chose to travel to depending on how easy or difficult it might make their travel experience.

It was also interesting that a group of young participants envision that passports will go digital in the future and also interesting that most participants were not keen on the design of their passport but then did not chose to cover it with a passport cover that they do like the design of.

This activity allowed us to gain an insight into both the travel experiences of our participants but also their views and opinions on passports in general and how they relate to privilege. When reflecting back on the activity, the participants felt that this activity had made them think and consider the value of their passport in a new way.

The top two players had the the most privileged passports and were able to board more flights to travel faster up the board as well as avoiding having to take boat trips down as they needed a higher roll of the dice. Although luck was partly involved in the outcome of the game, the results clearly gave our participants an experience of the desired outcome and showed them a representation of what it is like to be privileged by the passport you carry or less fortunate based on how restricted you are through the passport you have. This was also represented in the answers given by participants directly after the game when we asked a few questions. They felt the effects of being more or less privileged and we even seen some visible frustration from the losers who "felt Cheated." They expressed that after playing they had a clearer idea of how passports link to the sense of privilege and further expressed that they had indeed felt their own experiences with their travels represented in the outcomes of the game. 

Possibly more importantly they noted that the game was enjoyable and thus they became more engaged in the workshop. 
I hope this means they were able to answer our questions and interviews more honestly as well as give more authentic data by being in a positive mindset even if they were "cheated out of a win." ]]> 2021-11-04 19:15:52 UTC https://padlet.com/matthewestevens/7pjpef8suoqwzw6/wish/1868294215 TRAVEL EXPERIENCE COLLAGE https://padlet.com/matthewestevens/7pjpef8suoqwzw6/wish/1868313525 In this activity, participants were asked to create a collage of images which best represent their own personal travel experiences. We wanted the group to think about how enjoyable their travel experiences have been as a result of the passport they have. Were their experiences positive, easy and stress-free or negative with longer queues and checks. 

We used Pinterest to conduct this activity. Before the workshop we created a Pinterest board and created a collection of images relating to travel. We asked participants to create their own board, selecting 10 images from the board we provided and then source another 10 images which were more personal to them and expressed their travel experiences.

- All participants felt that the point of our workshop was clear- they understood that the workshop was all about passports and the privilege they afford.

- All participants felt that our workshop had been interactive and enjoyable. -- We believe that by creating an enjoyable workshop we were really able to engage with our participants and gain honest and genuine responses from them.

- When asked which activity was their favorite, the responses were mixed however the 2 most popular activities were the board game and the passport cover design activity.

- Participants felt that the Cross the Line activity had made them think about the idea of passports and privilege the most by asking them to reflect upon their own experiences.

This was so important in getting a really visceral visualisation of the differing experiences in our participants in even a small group like this one.
