What is Race? - I.M. & C.J.

6 Facts
1. Race is a modern idea. Ancient societies did not divide people according to their physical differences, but according to religion, class, status, even language.

2. Race has no genetic basis meaning when we say Africans have big ears that trait isn't singled out to just Africans.

3. Slavery predates race. Meaning through history we enslaved people due to conquest or war or maybe even due to religious differences, but in America slavery happened because of natural inferiority because they looked different or they talked different but throughout time they were psycologically made to believe that they themselves were inferior to the whites.

4. Human subspecies don't exist meaning there is no superior race or inferior race.

5. Skin color is only skin deep meaning when you dress a certain way, act a certain way, and even talk a certain way, but in the end you are still and always will be defined by the color of your skin.

6. As the race concept evolved, it justified extermination of Native Americans, exclustion of Asian immigrants, and taking Mexican lands. Racial practicies were institutionalized within government, laws, and society.

Important Vocabulary

1. Subspecies- is a category that ranks below a species

2. Predates-exist or occur at a date earlier than (something).

3. Biological - of or relating to biology or living organisms

4. Genetic Basis- The genes that are in your body

The term "Race" has created stereotypes and racism, people treat each other differently
because of the color of their skin and the shaping of their nose, face or eyes. From how I just answered
the question it obviously ins't a fair system when people say they are superior to another race.
There was once a time when you were only superior because of the technology you had now
you are superior because you aren't a certain color or because you are.

Isaia got 7 correct which wasn't that bad considering most of the categories of races had the same characteristics. You see when people look at me most people believe that my whole lineage is full of black people but that isn't true that may be the reason that I was able to distinguish these different categories and know that some of them have the same characteristics. One of my grandmothers is creole, native american and black

In Medieval, Renaissance and ancient times the term white and black wasn't used. They were identified by their nationality, their language not the color of their skin. For example Hungarian, English, French, Spanish, Danish, African, Middle Eastern, and these are just a few. The term white didn't come until the 17th century when Europeans and Americans felt superior than all other races.

Race isn't biological because it's a social construct. Although you do learn that some traits, are inherited from your parents or grandparents. People who are organized into racial groups are dissimilar because depending on where you are raised they way you act or talk will differ.

The slide that we found most interesting was Split Identity, because it showed how people gave stereotypes based on the appearance of a person. People perceive other people differently, because of the actions of groups of people have affected the perception of the race as a whole. The news portrays a race a certain way that could cause fear into people. The white people are more wealthy, Asians are smarter, and black people like fried chicken & watermelon. To us, being American means to be treated equally among all minorities and majority.
