ATs assist children with disabilities in the classroom. They can be as simple as a glass to enlarge text for a student with low vision or as complicated as a computerized communication unit. A student's needs will change over time so students will need different ATs as they change. Students receive ATs based on their goals set in their IEP. Their IEP helps to ensure that students with disabilities are given the assistive technologies that will most benefit them. Here is a short video of AT in action in the classroom.

ATs bring inclusion to the classroom. Inclusion is extremely important in the classroom and brings many benefits into a classroom. It gives students an opportunity to learn the same concepts as their peers but in a way they best understand. ATs give students that opportunity to succeed and actually comprehend what is taught to them. Also, assistive technologies are beneficial to all students. 15-20% of the general population needs some kind of assistance in their education. When ATs are made available to all students no matter their abilities, it gives students who really need it an opportunity to utilize it to their advantage.

Here are some examples of AT in the classroom. AT is used a lot for students who have difficulty writing. Some items that help students with writing could be pencil/pen grips so they have an easier time holding the pencil to write. Another example to aid a writer is using a spell checker to help students out when they have trouble spelling words. AT is also used for students who struggle with reading. Things such as predictable texts and books who read aloud to students can be very beneficial to the student who struggles with reading.

Differentiated Instruction (DI)

DI assumes that students learn differently and will need to be taught that way in order to be successful. Students learn in so many different ways. Some students will be very visual learners while some may learn best kinetically. So classrooms who used DI must create activities that applies all modalities. This ensures that all students will be represented in the activity so they can all learn what is being taught easily. Planning activities that will benefit all students is essential to a successful classroom. Here is a short video that explains how you can plan your activities/lessons to be in DI.

It is very important to use DI in your classroom because it is responsive to the needs of your classroom. Not one classroom will be same. Students will have different needs than those around them. So with DI it helps teacher to have their activities centered around what best benefits their students' needs. Also, DI gives teachers an organized way to plan lessons to benefit all students in their class. This makes it easier to ensure all students' needs are met and that their students will understand concepts given to them.

One example of DI is having reading materials in different levels throughout the classroom. This ensures that every student has something they can read no matter their reading level. This meets all their reading needs and gives every student an opportunity to practice any reading skills. Another way DI can be in the classroom is having reading buddies. Students can be paired together while they read. They can help each other as they read to better understand what they are learning.
