The process of dichotomization can have both positive and negative effects in society and influences the way we interact with one another. It can even occur subconsciously which leads to creating prejudgments of people before understanding them and their truth. It has a lot to do with having an idea of others based on prior knowledge, interactions, stereotypes, and depictions in the media. It impacts my understanding of difference by leading me to question how I draw lines between what makes people who they are, and why?

This crash course video relates to the concept of our roles in society, especially in terms of master statuses. It discusses social interaction, in which you will find different statuses amongst how these identities are set. It shows that many of these statuses are defined by expectations of how you fulfill your role. For example, some statuses you are born with such as race and ethnicity, however later on in life you would pick up the status of occupation such as becoming a dentist or a principal. This would be their primary identification and is fueled by the impact they leave on society and how they perform their role.

Recognizing my own experiences and differences will help me gain emotional competence as a social worker and maintaining a sociological understanding of difference. In this study by Nicole Kaul, researchers examine how social workers can incorporate recognizing their personal privilege in their practice. The first form of privilege would be pursuing higher education, which many clients of underrepresented groups might not have. By being aware of the power dynamics, social workers are able to construct a more effective relationship with their clients by stepping outside of their own privilege and being able to empathize with them, but also utilizing the resources that come with their privilege to empower them.

Kaul, Nicole.

In an excerpt by Hoorie I. Sidiqque titled "I am a Pakistani Woman", she discusses discomfort that she felt in her childhood regarding being from a different culture/religion amongst her peers. I relate to her feeling of shame from being ridiculed and thought of in a negative light, simply for coming from a different country. I reflect back on my own childhood and remember my journey of expressing my culture, then feeling ashamed of it based on the response of others, and then learning to embrace it again through reconnecting with my roots and recognizing that there will always be some sort of negative bias, however it is up to me to decide how I will respond to it. Will it lead to conforming and trying to fit in, or will it push me to love my heritage even more? I chose the latter.

An example of how I've experienced privilege in my life would be by having social support to work through distressing life experiences. Having close friends and family members as well school counselors and even a therapist is a privilege, an advantage that not many people have. Without these, what will someone resort to in order to work through their trauma and emotions? It can often lead to substance abuse, desensitization, poor mental health, and even suicide. In the future, when I am working with a client I will take the time to understand how alone they must have felt through times when they probably needed the most support.
