The book starts out with all of them living a happy life after escaping a horrid place known as the school, not actually a school, but a lab that involves experiments on real people as well as children. Mutations known as Erasers kidnap a member of Max's, the main character in the book. flock named Angel. There are a total of 5 kids in the flock, called that because they have wings that an actually fly.
