Imagine sitting next to a friend and all of a sudden you begin to feel out of place, frustrated, antsy, and ultimately uncomfortable. You don’t know what’s wrong and can’t really explain how you’re feeling. All you know to do is naturally react ; cry, become furious, grow anxious, and some may even throw an adult tantrum, which can look a number of ways.

Without the proper language and skills necessary to help regulate these emotions, your body will react before you have time to respond. A response is planned and a reaction is not. Our goal with these skills and resources are to aid in the building of your scholars responses to these emotions rather than their reactions - Social Emotional Learning.

In this peer reviewed article you will find that one of the three attributes to the development of these skills is “family engagement, which helps ensure that children develop SEL skills both at school and at home” (McClellan, M. M et al., 2017). You may think, “one more thing for me to try” or “my kid will not respond well to this” to those statements we’ll respond by saying, “just try”. You never know until you try and here are a couple of fun and easy ways to practice regulating your scholars emotions: counting, box breathing, counting backwards, forcing laughter or a smile, hugs (physical connection), and so much more. If you have any questions please reach out to our school counselor Mrs. Martinez @jmartinez@fcymca.org.

In the meantime feel free to watch these videos and try one new thing with your scholar!

Many changes in the home?

Change isn’t easy for anyone and can manifest itself in a number of ways for your scholars. Outbursts, doubt, fear, impatience, anxiety, complaining, and many other forms of frustration are ways your scholar may be reacting to the change around them. Studies have shown that scholars who experience minor or major changes at home tend to suffer major behavioral consequences at school. For scholars with psychological differences or exceptionalities change can present itself to be extremely difficult with respect to at home activities and minor shifts and transitions at school. While these undesirable behaviors can present themselves to be extremely difficult to manage, we recognize that there are a number of ways we can help manage their emotions and cope with the changes.
