One boy, Salva, has to run away from his home because of a war. He walks for a long time to find a safe place and later moves to a new country called the United States.
One girl, Nya, lives in a village where there is not much water. Every day, she walks a long way to get water for her family.
Even though they live at different times, their stories come together in a special way at the end.
