They should incorporate topics and subjects that are relevant in the present time and seek to enlighten learners about the current political, social, economic, and environmental issues that confront humankind. This knowledge would be pertinent for them and enable them to come up with creative and realistic solutions to 21st century problems.

Making 21st century learning a reality also entails instituting social policies that enable all people to acquire high quality education irrespective of their backgrounds or disabilities.

Definition of 21st Century learning

21st century learning entails the amalgamation of present educational philosophies, information and communication technology tools and inventions, and traditional learning tools in order to bolster learning outcomes.

Changes to make 21st century learning a reality for ALL students

A change that would adapt learning towards meeting the needs of the 21st century is shifting from traditional pedagogical approaches and adopting newer philosophies such as heutagogy and andragogy. Heutagogy refers to self-directed learning while andragogy entails self-determined learning. These techniques imply progressively shifting the responsibility of learning from teachers to learners. Teachers should gradually shift from being conveyors of knowledge to becoming guides and coaches who help learners in gathering knowledge from diverse repertories such as online databases and peer networks. Moreover, learners in the 21st century have different attitudes and expectations about education and life in general, and the education system should change to conform to this situation to ensure that learning is fulfilling and meaningful for learners.

Successful 21st century learning would also require shifting to a lifelong learning outlook to education. This means that education is not finite and restricted to formal education gained through schooling, but an ongoing and unceasing activity throughout life. Individuals should endeavor to learn new lessons when interacting with their peers, parents, and with their environments. This means that educators should strive to make learning fun and adventurous so that learners are excited about learning new things and engaging constructively with their environments throughout their lives.

Definition of 21st Century learning

21st century learning is education that uses modern, innovative teaching and learning techniques and seeks to prepare students to meet the opportunities and challenges of the contemporary times.

Changes to make 21st century learning a reality for ALL students

It is important that all educational stakeholders embrace changes that emanate from globalization. This entails taking an open-minded approach to education and espousing best practices in learning by blending lessons and experiences from different geographic regions and backgrounds. It also entails inculcating learners with skills that would enable them to fit into a diverse world, where people from diverse cultures and backgrounds intermingle seamlessly.

It is also imperative that the educational sector acquiesce to, accept, and integrate innovations in diverse fields into the educational sector. For example, it is important to integrate diverse technologies into the field of education. This includes introducing computers into the classroom to aid learning through the comprehension of concepts and by increasing the scope of available information during their learning activities.

It is also essential to implement changes to the physical environments in which learning takes place. This stems from the fact that the learning process is as important as the learning outcomes. Classrooms should be friendlier to learners, be designed ergonomically, and incorporate graphics that are more visually stimulating. Learning processes and classroom designs should also mimic the natural environment more closely so that learners are at ease and better able to relate with the real world upon graduation. Moreover, learners should not feel pressured or coerced to behave in ways that they feel as aberrant and uncharacteristic of the reality.
