The biggest take away I received was that they discovered they had internalized negativity they were unaware of, and then were able to internalize the positive they've achieved. They also made it clear that it's a constant process, necessitating a persistence in moving forward to retain their progress. On the one hand, my tendency is to believe that I don't have the power to make a measurable difference of change. However, we all have our "corners" as Obama puts it. We have our circles and areas where we can enact change. As a teacher, one of my "corners" is certainly my classroom. I can have an immediate and lasting impact on equality in how I deliver instruction. We can all make the world a better place in our homes as well. The way we teach out children, treat our spouses, and treat our guests can have a lasting impact in our communities. I really enjoyed our former president's holistic approach to racial equity through civil disobedience and voting. I believe that our students hold the power to economic, social, and political change. I also believe that students can be greatly empowered through education. I say can and not are because there still are many racist biases and forms of systemic racism that exist in our current educational system. To see these men pushing forward for justice and equity in a way that recognizes they have work to do on themselves (and are doing it better than most, with more challenging circumstances than I ever had to face, they are amazing!) and they will be dealing with other flawed people. This is the grace and insight that can lead to real progress. Real progress did occur in the 60's, then there was a long period of complacency and accepting/rationalizing/being ignorant of the racism that was left. Probably hoping it would resolve itself. Now it is exciting to see this push forward to make real progress again. But with the ultimate goal of understanding across all races and cultures and calling out people that put others down because of their own issues, insecurities, and ignorance. The civil disobedience, posting, protesting is critical. It is needed to get everyone's attention.
