The pandemic has given me lots of time to ponder the purpose of school, particularly because I’m hearing so many parents complain about online schooling and watching my own daughter become increasingly disgruntled and unmotivated. The current situation has made me wonder what we’re trying to accomplish. So first, I think it’s helpful to consider the functions of schooling—what schools actually do—and then use that as a springboard to think about school’s purpose. I see schooling as having three primary functions: social, economic, and political” (Hess and Noguera, 2021 pg. 9).

I agree with Fredrick Hess that both of these goals are important for a well balanced education. But how to we achieve that goal.
