It doesn't have to be on a Friday and I think it's fair to both students and teachers to allow them to decompress after Halloween (unless we're on fall break!) Also, someone mentioned keeping flip-flop weeks consistent before a break. I would agree. Whether or not we release on a Thursday or Friday, keep that early release day before breaks. I would really like to have the last day of school on Thursdays. Give up one of the other days (Dec 21?) instead. As far as a break in October...I have spoken to parents whose younger children have a break in October and they said it was difficult for their little ones. They have just gotten used to the school routine, then they have a break. It takes a few weeks for them to get back to the routine after that break. For older students it might be beneficial. This is when we realize we have a very wide range of ages we have to consider. It would be wonderful to have the PD the day after Halloween, BUT we would lose kids who take a long weekend, therefore losing ADA. As for Thanksgiving Break, in the past when we only had 2 or 3 days off, we once again lost families who took the full week anyway, therefore losing ADA. Finally, as for Spring Break, it does not need to be tied to Easter, BUT, many families take the Monday after Easter for a travel day. Once again, we lose students and ADA.
