Although it is hard with open concept, I have been really trying to get my students moving and talking. All they want to do is talk to each other, why not let them talk about content? We play Simon says with our math vocabulary, skip count while we are transitioning, and Math Workshop with stations has been something my students are enjoying this year.

I have really changed things up in small group instruction around this time of year. I have kept students engaged by playing games while working or after they answer and accomplish a number of problems. Some of my students either lack motivation or do not understand topics at all so I try to get them motivated to work when they see me. We played a basketball game the past couple of weeks and I was thinking about tic tac toe or some type of bean bag toss for the following weeks.

I have often altered my lessons to get the students focused on just one or two vocabulary words rather than trying to overload them with several at one time as they need to practice and visually see the key concepts in science. I want to see where the students are at with regard to understanding a specific content. Instead of just moving along just to keep pace with the Calendar - science schedule, I have recently begun to gain more confidence and make use of technology and made some useful and fun formative assessments to help students' practice on a concept.

I change my activities or lessons often. There are times that I may try an activity with one class period and the activity misses the mark of the intended objective. I will sometimes either change different aspects of the lesson or may omit the activity all together for my other class periods. I have used math stations (small groups) much more this year then I have in years prior. I have tried to structure my math stations to include at least one station that the students are able to collaborate with each other. Students are constantly asking me are we doing stations today?

We had a pretty dry biography project that required students to write a biography about someone. Instead I had students create a biography power point slide on a person of their choosing (i.e., famous, athlete, author, youtuber, etc). They had to include basic information about their subject, but they were all able to complete it. Students were really engaged in the topic and we all had a really good time with the assignment.

One area I am trying to make more entertaining is homework. Its an area that I have added mid-year to help with getting additional practice. Because I have seen a decline homework participation, my newest goal is to go digital with it to where students can complete it on their phones or tablets. Its something I am trying the next couple weeks and will adjust as needed.

I had the students get in small groups and read a passage and then share with the other groups important facts or something that they thought was interesting. They liked that they were working together and not having to read the whole passage. They also like that they could share with the class. I think they understood the material a lot better teaching it this way.
