This shows context in multiple ways, the consistent placement of waste disposal areas throughout the city is a low context reflection of the strict anti-littering laws; the flowerbeds often placed on top reflect a low context appreciation of natural beauty; the presence of recycling, battery disposal, and cigarette disposal provide low context for values of safe and renewable waste usage, as well as smoking culture in the city; the actual signage for each section reflects high context of how and where waste should be disposed of.

Group 1- For an example of non-verbal, we took a photo of these mannequins in this store front. They show a non-verbal communication of acceptable dress, clothing culture, and dressing for context in Astana. The clothing is clearly summer wear, and features light, bright colors throughout; However, the length of the clothing reflects more conservative attitudes and styles in regard to showing skin compared to American sensibilities. With the exception of young boys' clothing, all of these mannequins are almost fully covered, and two dresses are prominently featured, displaying more traditional style sensibilities for women.

Group 1- For social organization, we compare these two pieces of wall art that are featured next to each other (see the adjacent pin for a better view of the bottom mural). The top wall art features images of traditional Kazakh culture: images of yurts, horses, and traditional Kazakh decorative patterns.Interestingly, this more traditional wall art is faded and peeling, while the more contemporary wall are below it is in very good condition. The contemporary wall art features angel's wings, hearts, and rain falling on an umbrella as well as chalk graffiti clearly drawn by Kazakh children from the adjacent playground. The mural appears that it may have been done independently by an artist, while the wall art above it looks like it may have been commissioned by a business or the government. The drastic contrast in states of repair of each piece calls into question which aspect of culture is considered the "dominant" or "real" culture in the modern cultural milieu: the depiction of Kazakh heritage as it once was, or modern culture in a cosmopolitan age and all that comes with it.

Group 1- For time, we took a picture of this pendulum designed by a french physicist with the name Jean Bernard Leon Foucault (d. February 11, 1868). The pendulum was designed to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth and was featured hear in the middle of this open-air public space. This pendulum featured individual plaques in Kazakh, Russian, and English and shows values of time and functional beauty in Astana.

Group 1- For environment, around this area we walked through a subterranean pedestrian sidewalk. Within this underground we also found a street musician who was singing a song in Russian, then "Basket Case" by Green Day in English. This shows environment by how Astana is able to accommodate both automobiles and pedestrians, while valuing pedestrian travel enough to spend the money to create subterranean pathways. This also shows the environmental cunning of the street musician to use the enclosed space for shade and to make interactions with paying pedestrians more likely.

Group 1- For language, we took a photo of this business center named after present day Almaty (formerly Alma-ata). The sign features both Cyrillic Kazakh and Russian, but also displays an interesting relationship with names in Kazakhstan. During the Russian Empire, this former capital of Kazakhstan bore the name Verniy Fort, that was later changed to Alma-ata, which I believe was a somewhat grammatically-incorrect attempt to name the city "Mother" or "Father of apples". In the modern day, the city is no longer a capital and no longer bears the name Alma-ata, but this show is just one small drop of linguistic and political history.
