Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is a long-running series of graphic novels that is written and illustrated by Hirohiko Araki. "Jojo" as many call it, is comprised of 8 parts, the first of which began publication in 1987 in Japan. It has gone all the way up to part 8, which is currently published on a monthly basis. The Series-which was previously exclusive to Eastern audiences-has gained massive popularity surges in the West after it got a highly acclaimed animated TV adaptation.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure has the name "Bizarre" in it for a reason: Because it's really bizarre. If you think it sounds weird during my review of the fifth part, that's because it is, I've simply become use to it. Anyways, the 8 parts that Jojo is currently made up of are all loosely connected stories that appear to be sub-plots of each other. No two parts have an exactly similar plot or set of main characters because they each take place in different decades, locations, or alternate universes. Part 5 brings us to Italy in the year 2001, where we are introduced to our main protagonist, Giorno Giovanna, and his experiences with the criminal gang known as "Passione."

3.) A Hard Childhood

Giorno Giovanna is an interesting case when he is compared to the main characters of any of the other parts, and even a lot of other works. This is because most of the hardships that a main character experiences over the course of the story that shape them, Giorno experienced as a child. He had an abusive stepfather and a irresponsible drunk of a mother who both made him feel insignificant and worthless. Already at the age of 8, Giorno had formed deep insecurities about what people thought of him, and developed a habit of reading people to test what they thought he was worth. Giorno became more and more introverted as no one would treat the seemingly emotionless kid as human. Though his childhood was a mentally damaging experience, he became very good at reading people and situations; skills that would be very helpful for him later down the road.

5.) Jojo's Famous "Stands"

A big reason that Jojo became so popular was because of it's unique approach to the common action genre that had already been thoroughly explored. One of these approaches being the introduction of "Stands" in part 3. Stands are ghost-like beings that are created from the spiritual energy of their user. The best way to explain them to someone who is unfamiliar would be to say that they're kind of like an extra limb. The most common appearance for many stands is to have a humanoid shape, which could sometimes be described as robotic looking, though there are many stands that can manifest to look like objects, animals, or other things. They, with few exceptions, don't have their own personality because they are said to be a physical manifestation of their user's soul. Because of this, every stand is unique in look and ability. Also important to note is that about 80% of stands are named after or pay homage to popular songs, bands, or figures in Western pop culture since author Hirohiko Araki is very big on Western culture.

6.) Themes

Through a series of events, Giorno(15) is entered into a small faction of the gang where he meets the other characters: Bruno Buccellati(20), Leone Abbacchio(20), Pannacotta Fugo(16), Guido Mista(18), and Narancia Ghirga(17), who are all stand users as well. The team is entrusted with carrying out a dangerous mission for the Passione's illusive boss, which will pit them against many enemies of the gang.

One of Vento Aureo's main themes is the trust & teamwork shared between comrades. To the rest of the squad, Giorno seems to be something of a prodigy. What fifteen year old could show as much intellect and fearlessness on the battlefield like he does? Giorno gains the trust and respect of his team members through his actions. They all begin to see him as a fearless leader, even Bruno who is the team’s official leader. The importance of the team’s trust lies in that they will face impossible odds and many strange circumstances. The members of the team must have the utmost trust in each other, or else it may cost them their lives. One of my favorite parts where this is displayed is during a battle they have near the end, where Giorno and Mista are facing an enemy who is attacking them remotely from a helicopter. Mista's ability involves the use of a pistol, which is their best bet at taking down an aerial enemy, the only problem is that a pistol wouldn't be able to take down a helicopter, and Mista is doubtful that he'll be able to hit it. Giorno, overflowing with confidence, comes up and grabs Mista's arm to brace his shot, blowing away Mista's doubt(See pic on the right). The six shots that Mista fires barely hit the foot rail of the helicopter, but it's enough for Giorno to imbue them with life and grow vines on them-connecting them to the ground and immobilizing the helicopter. This is an accurate representation of the team's strength in unity, and the ability to prevail using teamwork. The gang learned of trust and having faith in one another from Giorno, but Giorno had to learn that somewhere himself. Back as a child, when he rescued the gangster, it is narrated that "Giorno learned the importance of 'trusting people', something he should've learned from his parents, from the silence of a complete stranger." (Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Ch. 444.) This goes to show how with the right mindset, something as superficial or mundane as, "being courageous", or approaching someone in a respectful manner can go a long way

Possibly the most important theme of part 5 is escaping fate, or the concept of fate itself. Most of the team joined Passione after losing the chance at ever having a good life. They all realized that the world isn’t fair and that society does nothing to try and change this. Much like Giorno, they all abandoned society and decided to try and change it some way by joining a powerful organization. All of the members of the team have the same thing in common, that they lost to fate, but refused to let that define them as people. They all continued onward towards a larger fate in order to accomplish something good, even just the smallest thing.

This is where a lot of the group's drive comes from. They have a sort of mentality that they are invincible since they ditched their fates. Giorno in particular fancies himself something of a “chosen one” since he was able to return from the depths of despair and reinvent who he was. I think that this also ties in with a theme of “youth” since the cast is made up of mostly teenagers. The previous parts featured protags. In their late teens/early 20s but they always seemed to have a guardian or teacher that would guide them. In the midst of battle, Giorno tells his teammates that sacrificing yourself to defeat the enemy is not resolve, but that "Resolve is to carve out your destined path through the darkened wastes!"(Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Ch. 14) which is ironic coming from the one who frequently acts as a pawn to draw out the enemy. This just goes to prove the point that Giorno feels so invincible, that death isn't even a n option. The youthful empowerment of this story really shines through the main cast, especially with Giorno as their teacher.

Strangely, the one who would bring Giorno out of the darkness would be a man bleeding out on the side of the road due to his involvement with gang activities. Giorno saw his own melancholy and loneliness reflected in this dying gangster's eyes, so something within him appeared in order to help this man. An ability known as a "Stand"(see text box #5) manifested to help Giorno. Giorno used his Stand's ability, which is to imbue things with "life", to grow tall grass around the man to hide him from his pursuers. The man repaid Giorno's deed by silently watching over him and protecting him from bullies and dangerous gangsters. This was the first time anyone had treated Giorno as an individual to be respected, which brought him out of the dark and sparked a fiery ambition within him. Giorno declared "I have a dream! To become a 'Gang-Star!'" (I like to imagine that a "gang-star" is just a more "fabulous" gangster). Giorno would set his sights on reforming "Passione", the most prominent gang in Naples, and eradicating all the violence and unhappiness from the city, just as that unnamed gangster did for him.

7.) The Real-World Implications of Giorno's Character

Giorno’s unique writing
Giorno is not the most well received out of all of the characters in Jojo. People find him shallow, uninteresting, and lacking in any substantial character development. I think that these people completely fail to see the interesting way that Giorno is written and why. In an action genre aimed at teens, it’s the norm for the MC to begin their journey with little experience, and having the end result being that they learn some important lessons. Giorno already seems to have reached that end result, acting stoic and wise; a very different thing to see the MC act like. This allows for Giorno to act as a perfect catalyst for developing his other teammates. This does not mean that Giorno has zero development of his own though. Giorno and the rest of the gang bounce development off of each other, which is evident in the way that Giorno begins to act with much regard to his teammates’ lives even if it compromises his goal by possibly getting him killed. But, as I stated before, death is not something that Giorno fears.

This kind of main character is a very unexplored approach, I feel like. Despite Araki’s well executed approach, it was generally poorly received. I feel like if a better known author tried an approach like this it would be more appreciated by readers. But honestly, I think that every reader has an inner critic that likes to nitpick details in order to confirm to themselves that what they just read is worth their full appreciation. Anyone who enjoyed watching Giorno’s intelligent use of his abilities, fearless acts, and teamwork as much as I did, knows why Vento Aureo was a success.

If it's not already clear, I have plenty of praises to sing for this generally underrated part of the series. Of all the parts, I found this one to be one of the most entertaining to read, with it's action packed scenes and loveable cast of characters. I could just say it's "good", but that wouldn't do it any justice. This part perfectly burns the idea of overcoming fate right into the very essence of the story. From the characters, to the way they overcome hardships, the themes stay consistent and meaningful. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Vento Aureo, is truly a feat of literature. And with that said... arrivederci.
