However this treatment can and very well varies from one person to another but doesn't always work. The typical overdose treatment is treated in an emergency facility or a hospital. MDMA (ecstasy) tablets often have toxic additives in them, making the medical staff treat the patient like they ingested an unknown substance.

Medical professionals try and receive the following info from the patient or family and friends in order to provide better treatment....
*Patients age, weight, and physical condition
*Time drug was taken
*How much of the drug was ingested
*Other substances that may have been ingested

First steps in treating a MDMA overdose is re hydration and lowering body temp by giving the patient intravenous fluids and cool compress or baths. Also in severe cases when the respiratory function is affected the doctors will quickly stabilize breathing and open an airway.

Other common treatments include....

  • Gastric lavage/ stomach pumping, to remove any remaining undigested drug
  • Activated charcoal to stop any additional absorption of the drug
  • Administration of medications to ease other symptoms such as nausea and anxiety.
  • Administration of medications such as Dantrolene, a muscle relaxant, may be given to ease muscle tension and to lower body temperature if malignant hypothermia is suspected.
