There were African Americans in the army, but they were soldier who previously were in the army, there were no new recruits. This was reality, until the British told the Enslaved that they would be freed if they fought for Britain. This action caused the Continental army to enlist enslaved also promising freedom. Lord Dunmore implemented this policy, and had a fighting force of 800 ex-slaves, which survived several battle, until it was destroyed by Smallpox. Also the British saw the slaves as a way to cripple the economy of the more slave dependent South, which would make it easier to take. The British were not very good people, even if they might have freed some slaves, those that had infectious disease were used as pseudo biological weapons.
